Museums Explore Both the Modern and Historic

Melding its past and present is what San Antonio does best. The most recent example is two of the city’s newest museums: Ruby City and the Briscoe Western Art Museum. Ruby City features stunning exhibits in a beautiful modern museum with works derived from the private collection of Linda Pace, the late contemporary art philanthropist. Just a mile away, the Briscoe Western Art Museum captures the incredible art, history, and culture of the American West.

Ruby City and the Briscoe join an expansive collection of local museums including Texas’ first modern art museum, The McNay; cultural museum, UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures; natural history museum, The Witte; and art museum, the San Antonio Museum of Art; each of which has dynamic exhibits scheduled for 2020.

This city’s appreciation for artists and their works has never been more evident than the remarkable city-wide exhibit of the work of renowned artist and sculptor Sebastián. The exhibit, Sebastián in San Antonio: 50+ Years / 20+ Sites / 100+ Works, starts with arguably the city’s most iconic artwork – the 20-meter tall abstract sculpture, the Torch of Friendship, located just one block away from the historic Alamo.

Explore the Missions and Stroll the Culture Park

Hike, bike, float, and stroll the expanded River Walk, which now extends for 15 miles through the heart of the city – including all four colonial missions. The San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo), Concepción, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada, which are the largest collection of Spanish Colonial missions in the US, are a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.

History of the city continues to be celebrated in the newly redesigned San Pedro Creek Culture Park, a world-class park with colorful murals and poetry throughout telling the story of the rich history that defines San Antonio.

Food Infused with Culture and Creativity

Cultural and artistic exploration is best done on a delighted stomach. Fortunately, UNESCO has also designated San Antonio as a Creative City of Gastronomy, only the second city in the United States to receive the honor. This is due in thanks to the rich culinary heritage of the local food movement and an enthusiasm for innovation by graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, San Antonio. Always renowned for Tex-Mex, a new generation of culinary tastemakers in San Antonio is evolving traditional dishes into something different: Tex-Next. Creativity doesn’t stop with food. The city has also attracted worldwide attention for a whole set of inventive craft breweries and local distilleries specializing in brandy, whiskey, vodka, and gin.
