Was That the Best Time of Year to Go? Winter in South Africa is the best time for viewing game. The brush isn’t as thick, and there is less water so the animals are more active in search of water. It also is not as hot, which makes the temperature more bearable on safari. Winter is the off-season both for South Africa and Mauritius so rates are a little more affordable and everything is less crowded.
Why I Went There: I went to South Africa and an island country called Mauritius for my honeymoon. It was a dream vacation that my husband and I had always wanted to take.

You Won’t Want to Miss: Definitely do not miss a safari in Kruger National Park. There are many luxury lodges from which to choose, but we had an awesome time at Londolozi. They treat you like part of the family, and we saw more animals than you could imagine.
Eat Here: Try the malva pudding! It’s a traditional South Africa dessert served with either ice cream or whipped cream, and it’s delicious. Kingklip is a really good white fish that is eaten a lot in Cape Town and is really good.
Play Here: Londolozi Founders Camp was the most exciting part of our trip. Seeing wild animals in their natural habitat was fascinating.
If I Went Again: I would skip Mauritius and spend longer on safari. Mauritius was certainly nice, but it’s not much different than other pretty islands around the world. I would also stay longer at the Cybele Forest Lodge. We spent one night there because we couldn’t make a connection in time to get to our safari, and Cybele was incredible!
How Did You Get There From Dallas? We flew from Dallas to London and then London to Cape Town. To get to Mauritius, we flew Cape Town to Johannesburg and then to Mauritius. We had to take a small, chartered plane to get to the safari camp.
