Sometime during the three-hour drive into Broken Bow, you will begin to leave the restricting walls of the big city behind. It will probably happen as you drive through the quaint town of Idabel. There you’ll notice the trees reaching high above the road, towering with ancient beauty as they sway easily in the breeze. The transformation will quickly calm your heart and gently usher you into this amazing natural wilderness, astounding in its diversity.

There are many options for lodging, including fully equipped cabins suitable for both couples and families of up to 18, some along the splendorous Mountain Fork River, some near Broken Bow Lake, and others deep in the plush woods. There are also plenty of camping areas, trailer hookups, and hotels.

You’ll enjoy losing yourself in the woods.

After you wake up in your brightly decorated cabin near the river and cook a beautiful breakfast in your fully outfitted kitchen, you can start your morning by taking a guided fly fishing tour on the Mountain Fork River, or perhaps just a nice morning hike through the Beavers Bend State Park. Not up for such a rigorous start? Enjoy a cup of coffee on the cabin patio while listening to the trees rustle and let the fresh oxygen ease your mind. Time moves slowly up here, and as the afternoon moves the sun through the sky, you can head out to the rich waters of Broken Bow Lake for a boat ride, quick swim, or just some time relaxing on the beach. For the river lovers out there, you can rent canoes and kayaks and float the majestic waters of the Mountain Fork River.

As evening descends, you can make your way to one of the family-friendly, fun-loving restaurants, and there is even a local winery available for tastings called Girls Gone Wine. After you finish, head back to the cabin and sit around the fire while roasting marshmallows and listening to the bugs sing their siren song. The welcoming arms of Broken Bow offer a comforting respite for the heart, and for the outdoor adventurer, there is no other place like it so close to Dallas.
