When I Went: November 2010
Was That the Best Time of Year to Go? It was the perfect time of year. It wasn’t scorching hot, and the nights were cool. The water was a little too chilly all day, but it just gave us more of an excuse to consume copious amounts of fruity drinks.
Why I Went There: It was a free trip to the Virgin Islands with a friend. It was getting cold in Dallas, and the sand and sun of the Caribbean were too enticing.
We Stayed Here: Bolongo Bay Beach Resort
You Won’t Want to Miss: Definitely rent your own Jeep. Driving around to the top of the island at night and watching the stars was probably one of my favorite parts. Plus, driving on the wrong side of the road is a trip.

Sits right on the beach, so you can look at the ocean while you enjoy your well-crafted meal. There’s also a little daiquiri bar on Frenchman Road (Route 30) where all of the seats are swings. Super cheap drinks, it’s outside, and the bartenders were great. Definitely hit that up.
Play Here: Our hotel had kayaks and other water toys that came with the hotel stay. Looked like fun, but we never got around to it. We mostly just lay on the beach, drove around and saw the island, or went shopping.
If I Went Again: Different time of year, maybe a little warmer, so that I was more inclined to lie on the beach and actually get a tan.
How Did You Get There From Dallas? Flew American Airlines.
Other Tips For Fellow Travelers: There are lizards and iguanas everywhere. The foliage was beautiful. The natives are nice. Just don’t wander off into the wrong part of town in the Jeep you rented.
