As of last weekend, it’s officially spring. Flowers are blooming, sunny skies are stretching into the evening, and the fashion showcase of the season is approaching: Easter weekend.
Whether you’ll be toasting to the season on the patio of Le Bilboquet or attending an Easter egg hunt in a family member’s backyard, these suggestions from local pros will ensure you’re well dressed. Revisit your closet, or perhaps indulge in some retail therapy, and delight in the joy of spring fashion.
Rebecca Hessel Cohen, the founder and creative director of Highland Park Village’s newest arrival LoveShackFancy, says that she expects to see a flurry of flowy maxis, floral headbands, and vintage jewelry this year. She also notes she loves a classic, timeless white Victorian- or Edwardian-inspired dress for Easter, along with soft pastels like mint greens, cherry blossom pinks, and hand-dyed violets.
“Easter is one of my favorite holidays, and I think everyone is especially excited to usher in the new season and sunnier days,” she says. “I cannot wait for dance parties in our garden, decorating cakes with my girls in beautiful florals, and coloring cut-out bunny ears to celebrate.”
Dress up your look, she suggests, by strapping on your best wedges. To keep it more casual, Hessel Cohen opts for a pair of her brand’s floral-printed Superga sneakers; if she’s planning to walk in the garden or run through the yard with her family, she goes barefoot.
Hessel Cohen also notes that straw hats, hair ribbons, and floral scrunchies will be on the Easter scene. Her handbag of choice might not be what you’d expect. “I love a handmade basket, which can be the most divine outdoors accessory, but is perfect for egg hunts too,” she says. “It’s a tradition with my mom and girls to customize our baskets every Easter with extra fabric from past collections, vintage ribbons, and other seasonal adornments.”
Nerissa Helpenstill, store director at Tootsies, says her team is seeing delicate dresses with feminine details, accented with oversized sleeves. She also mentioned many Tootsies clients are gravitating toward happy hues, like yellows and ocean blues. And don’t be surprised if you see pops of gingham, as she says it’s getting an update in modern silhouettes.
“Lockdown favorites like sporty sandals and bucket hats are still red-hot for spring 2021,” Helpenstill continues. For a “cool-girl Easter vibe,” she suggests a colorful dress with Loeffler Randall sandals and a Ganni bucket hat in a springy pattern.
Since Easter is a family affair, says Helpenstill, don’t forget about the little ones’ Easter looks.
“For a modern take on mother-child dressing, rather than matching head to toe, choose a color from your outfit and coordinate with an accessory or item of clothing [for kids] in that color,” Helpenstill says.
