Away’s Co-Founder Shares Her Favorite Dallas Destinations

For tourists and curious locals alike.

Now that the cult luggage brand’s color-drenched, Knox Street pop-up is in full swing (and their permanent store is being prepped for 2020), we caught up with co-founder and regular jet setter Jen Rubio to see what tops her Dallas travel itinerary.

What’s been your favorite travel experience in Dallas?

Discovering Dallas over the past few years has been really fun and I’ve especially enjoyed getting to know all the different neighborhoods. One of my favorite little pockets in the city is the Arts District, where I fell in love The Nasher Sculpture Center and its display of incredible works from around the world.”

Do you have a favorite Dallas hotel?

I’ve loved my stays at The Joule, but also recommend Hotel Zaza to anyone looking for somewhere lively to stay with friends.

What about a Dallas restaurant?

My favorite restaurant in Dallas is Bullion (for their steak tartare), and also, Donny Sirisavath’s Khao Noodle Shop, which was recommended to me by an editor at our in-house publication Here.

Just to round it out: favorite shop?

No visit to Dallas is complete without a visit to Forty Five Ten!

Naturally, we assume you’re an expert packer. What’s typically in your Away luggage?

A simple, black silk slip dress is always in my carry-0n—it goes with anything. In the winter, I’ll dress it up with boots and a chunky sweater, and in the summer, all I need are sandals and a piece of fun jewelry. I also always bring a Smythson travel jewelry tray, which is a must for keeping my valuables safe and organized while I’m traveling. My biggest tip for getting sleep while on the road is to bring both a weighted eye mask and a portable white noise machine to cancel out any loud sounds around my hotel room.
