Every once in a while I’ll get an email announcing that Dallas has made it onto a list of city rankings–usually designations like the Best Places for Millennials to Live or, like, Most Dangerous Cities for Drivers. Yesterday, however, a much more interesting statistic slid in my inbox. Match (formerly Match.com) says that Fort Worth and Dallas are two of the worst cities in the country for singles this “cuffing season.”
Before we go any further, allow me to include Match’s official definition of cuffing season: When daters find someone to settle down within the colder months…and may or may not be a relationship that lasts until the spring.
To be “cuffed” is to be boo’d up, locked down, taken, unavailable, in a relationship, or, at the very least, a situationship. It’s what you do when the weather grows nasty and you want someone with whom you can watch Netflix and go on wintery dates.
Match made its rankings of best and worst cities for cuffing based off of data from Singles in America, the nation’s largest study of singles’ dating habits, which surveys more than 5,000 U.S. singles of all ages, sexual orientations, and ethnicities.
Apparently, the most successful places for cuffing season–meaning the cities where singles are having the most sex and looking to casually date–include our distant neighbors Houston and San Antonio. Indianapolis tops the list, and, surprisingly enough, Los Angeles comes in at No. 10.
And then there’s the other list. “Not looking to get cuffed this year?” asks Match, which seems out of character. “Well, then these cities are for you because these cities are having the least sex while still being interested in casual dating.” (Kind of depressing!)
El Paso tops the list of least successful cuffing season locales, followed by Washington, DC, a city that’s been a real turn off lately. Fort Worth comes in at No. 5, one whole spot ahead of notoriously-hard-to-date-in New York. Dallas is No. 9, so it is one of the best of the worst, but that doesn’t really make the prospect of dating here look any less dismal.
