On Sunday night, local instructors broke the news on Instagram: Flywheel will close its Dallas and Plano locations by the end of the month. For anyone who’s been keeping an eye on the spin world, the news isn’t too shocking. With the growing popularity of convenient, at-home Peloton, and the growing threat of the spin bubble bursting, all spin studios, even national, New York-based giants like SoulCycle and Flywheel, have had to do some readjusting.
For Flywheel, whose co-founder stepped down as CEO in December, that currently means shuttering 11 of its 42 locations. Per local spin instructor Thomas Renner, the Shops at Highland Park location will close on Thursday night, and Plano’s will shutter later this month.
People often group Flywheel and SoulCycle together, but the two brands have always had their own distinct personalities. Flywheel seems to attract more serious cyclers. Where SoulCycle leans into Kumbaya moments, Flywheel focuses on competition (and real-time performance data). Flywheel has also had a longer relationship with Dallas—the Park Cities location opened in 2012, four years before SoulCycle’s 2016 arrival.
Classes will be held until the doors officially close, and anyone impacted by the sudden closures should be offered a full refund.
