Admittedly, I’m late to the party here. Billy Milner, the Dallas interior designer whose work with Christmas trees, bookcases, and even his deeply cool Deep Ellum loft have graced many a D Home page, first posted about the eventual closing of his store, Life of Riley, on July 31. (Full post embedded below.)
But it’s worth reiterating here, even more than a week after the news broke. Six years isn’t an eternity in retail years, but as Deep Ellum continues with the ebbs and flows of redevelopment during its most recent resurgence, restaurant and retail doors have been quick to change. Life of Riley’s presence, marked by polished vintage gifts and a notable candle collection, on Main Street (first at 2645, and then at 2814 in 2017) was substantial. Life of Riley is scheduled to close towards the end of 2019, and is currently hosting a substantial sale, with everything priced at 30 or 50 percent off.
Milner fans don’t have to mourn the shop’s closing entirely though. The newly opened Benny Jack’s Antiques (in the former White Elephant location on Riverfront) features a dapper Life of Riley-style vintage booth.
