Wellness is a major buzzword these days, but it can mean a little something different to everyone. Does it stand for self-care and restoration, or is it more about strength and endurance? So, we created a series breaking down the healthy habits of local influencers and entrepreneurs, allowing them to define what wellness means on a personal level.

Katey McFarlan has cultivated a mega-following (214,000 and counting) on Instagram via her “Chronicles of Frivolity” blog. From beauty and fashion tips to mothering advice, her fans can keep tabs on her daily decisions, which almost always include healthy meal prepping. “Our family will also cook one larger healthy meal on Sunday like a soup,” says McFarlan. “I’ll grab that if I’m running out the door to a meeting so that I’m not tempted to get fast food on the go.”

What’s a typical morning look like in your kitchen?
I love to get up a few hours before my daughter and get organized for the day. I make a glass of celery juice, use the Headspace app, and have some me time. I’ll sip on hot lemon water with two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, liquid turmeric, cayenne, and freshly grated ginger.

My husband is always running out the door early for work, but I force us to all have some form of breakfast together. Elisabeth and Butter’s Healthy Baked Oatmeal is our favorite family breakfast—it’s gluten-free and sugar-free. Then, I’ll take my daughter and our dog, Peaches, on a walk!

Where’s your favorite healthy lunch spot for a mother/daughter date?
Righteous Foods is our favorite healthy restaurant in Fort Worth. I dream of their baby kale salad! What I love most is that they make nutritiously dense options my entire family loves. With a two-year-old, most meals can be a battle as she learns about different tastes and textures. If she’s on a picky-eater strike, I know I can take her to Righteous Foods and she’ll eat anything I put in front of her.

What’s your favorite way to re-charge during the day when you’re hitting a lull?
I’m a firm believer in the art of the catnap. I normally work later in the evening since I’m home with our daughter most days, so my sleep schedule can get thrown off. If I can close my eyes for 15 minutes with her when she’s down for a nap, I’m certainly going to.

Aside from using the Headspace app in the morning, how do you combat stress as it creeps up during the day?
My husband and I do afternoon check-ins where we tell each other one thing we’re stressing over and the other asks how they can help. If I’m busy with work, he may do something as simple as book a reservation for me, or I’ll do the same for him. It’s a five-minute action that helps the other person feel calmer throughout the day.

Has blogging made you more conscious of your skin health and what’s being put on your body?
I’ll never break up with Retinol, but I like to know how products are made and what each brand is doing to make their product cleaner than before. If I run out of something and need to repurchase, I try to research and find if there is an alternative option that might be paraben-, sulfate-, and fragrance-free.
