What I’m Watching: the Cowboys’ Final Preseason Test

Plus: it's win or go home for the Wings, while FC Dallas tussles with another Western Conference playoff hopeful.

Since we last spoke, the Wings have split the first two games in their best-of-three series against the Sun, FC Dallas edged Eastern Conference top dog Philadelphia 1-0, and the Cowboys halved their penalty total in Saturday’s preseason win over the Chargers. Pretty good seven days!

Here’s what I’m watching this week:

Wednesday, 8/24—Sun at Wings8 p.m., ESPN

It all comes down to this. Can Dallas advance in the playoffs first time since 2015? Either way, Sam Hale and I will keep writing postgame, while Dorothy J. Gentry will have a larger story coming later in the week.

Friday, 8/26—Seahawks at Cowboys7 p.m., NFL Network

The most significant preseason game is in the same family of being the fastest sloth in the rainforest, but while this barely matters, we’ll get more time watching the starters than any time up until now. And when final cuts are made next Tuesday, you can bet that at least some of those decisions will tie into performances on Friday.

Saturday, 8/27—Real Salt Lake at FC Dallas8 p.m., TXA 21 & ESPN+

FCD’s landmark victory over Philadelphia was followed by a 4-0 shellacking in Nashville, who are three places behind Dallas in the Western Conference playoff race. Guess who’s one spot ahead of Nashville? Real Salt Lake won’t be able to overtake FCD in the standings with a win, but a win for Dallas could help provide some buffer as they look to secure a top-half spot in the conference.
