North Texas’ second-favorite Frisco-based footballers won the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, defeating the New England Revolution, 4-2. If I understood what the U.S. Open Cup is, I’d be more excited for them. I’d thought it was the Major League Soccer championship, but apparently it’s a side tournament that involves other soccer leagues. I didn’t know the U.S. had other pro soccer leagues. Doesn’t MLS dilute its brand by having teams play for multiple “cups” and “shields” and whatnot? This sort of nonsense and the acceptance of 0-0 ties is why soccer will likely never win over my red-blooded American heart. But anyway, +103

Pro-Trump Protesters
Our own Glenn Hunter said there were about 15 people brandishing signs in support of Donald Trump’s presidential bid in Ferris Plaza, across the street from the Dallas Morning News headquarters, when he stopped by on Wednesday. They were there to protest the newspaper’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton. Given the smallish crowd, they must have been pleased with earning themselves not only a tweet-storm by DMN editor Mike Wilson, but also getting Wilonsky to refer to them as a “coterie.” +27
Lakewood Theater
The East Dallas landmark is now officially a, uh, landmark. Still isn’t going to keep the owners from dividing it up into three restaurant spaces, as they reportedly plan to, but it offers more protections that the building had for some of its historic features. I had my wedding reception at the Lakewood, so I’m giving myself a half-win on this one too. +78

A blind former gang leader, who now runs a nonprofit that aims to keep kids from getting involved with gangs, is held at gunpoint by two members of the very gang that he helped found decades before. He manages to wrest the weapon from the robbers, chase them off, and to use his powers of deduction to finger the culprits. Has his life story been optioned for an episode of some CBS procedural yet? +15

As of right now, the longtime Dallas Cowboys head coach sits in first place in our Greatest Dallasites of All Time competition. But voting continues through Sept. 23, so there’s plenty of time left for that to change. +30

The team dropped their season opener in, as our Zac Crain put it, “super Cowboys fashion.” They fell to the New York Giants by the score of 20-19. -1
Dallas Wings
Somehow, despite an 11-21 season record, the team still had a shot at making the WNBA playoffs following their 84-81 defeat of the New York Liberty on Sunday. But those hopes were soon dashed when Phoenix beat Atlanta later in the day, eliminating the Wings from the postseason. -10

Teenagers will sometimes do dumb things, like make Trump-inspired pep rally banners with racist overtones. But when a city council member steps up to defend their actions? Makes the school look worse. -14

Houston Astros Fans
OK, so this took place in Houston. But it was at a game against the Texas Rangers, so that’s excuse enough. Context is that Texas completely owned the Astros this season, going 15-4 against them. And, not coincidentally, Houston is 10.5 games behind the Rangers in the American League West standings. Warning: NSFW language.
