How We Came Up with the Brands of CBD Oil for Seizures and Epilepsy

When we began to compile our list of brands for the best CBD oil for seizures and epilepsy, we made it a point to include some of the most reputable brands in the industry. We didn’t bother looking at cheaper, less reputable brands because oftentimes, these brands cut corners in the creation of their products. Sadly, cheaper brands often have products that are loaded with harmful solvents, pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals. Moreover, these types of CBD oils are also less potent and effective. Before we drew up our list of brands, we came up with a strict set of guidelines to follow. As we were selecting our top 15 brands, we examined each and every one for:

  • Potency of the CBD oil
  • Where the hemp was sourced from
  • If the brand strongly adhered to FDA guidelines
  • The variety of oil the brand sells: full-spectrum, broad spectrum, or CBD isolate
  • The THC levels in the oil
  • The results of third-party lab reports
  • Are product instructions thorough and easy to understand
  • Overall reputation of the brand

After we closely inspected and researched each of our brands, we were able to cut the list down to the top 15 brands that you’ll read about below. These top brands had some of the highest quality CBD oils on the market that was also potent and priced affordably.

What Research Says About CBD and Epilepsy

When the electrical activity in the brain changes, seizures are the result. According to scientists, there are a host of seizure types as well as potential causes. Some of the things that can cause seizures include:

  • Infections in the brain
  • Epilepsy
  • Severe lack of sleep
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Imbalances in electrolytes
  • Drug overdoses

CBD, or cannabidiol, one of the main chemical compounds found in the hemp and marijuana plants, has been shown to help people manage chronic pain, lower anxiety, and treat some types of seizures. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, all hemp-derived products are federally legal across all 50 states, providing they contain 0.3% or less THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the other main chemical compound found in the plants. THC levels in the hemp plant differ greatly from the THC levels in the marijuana plant. Because the hemp plant is bred to naturally contain low levels of THC, there is no way that anyone can feel “high” from taking hemp-based CBD products. Conversely, the marijuana plant contains large amounts of THC and will evoke a euphoric “high” sensation from those who use it.

When full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD is taken internally, it evokes what is known as the entourage effect. During the entourage effect, the cannabinoids naturally amplify each other’s positive properties while dampening their negative effects. Therefore, the combination of CBD, THC and other cannabinoids have the potential to have a therapeutic and positive effect on seizures and epilepsy. Additionally, every human and animal has an endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The ECS is responsible for regulating critical body functions and processes. For example, the ECS helps to regulate learning, memory, sleep, pain, temperature, immune responses, and much more. Its primary goal is to bring the body back into a state of balance, or homeostasis. Even though the body makes its own endocannabinoids, when someone takes CBD oil, the cannabinoids in the oil enter into the body and assist the endocannabinoids in their job. Therefore, if someone is experiencing seizures and their body’s endocannabinoids are deficient, it makes sense to think that taking CBD oil can help the endocannabinoid system both ease seizure symptoms and potentially reduce the occurrence of seizures altogether.

How CBD Helps with Seizures

As we stated above, the endocannabinoid system plays a huge role in bringing the body back to a state of balance. When CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, it can help modify and regulate systems and functions such as pain, sleep, appetite, and more. Scientists believe that the anti-seizure effects of CBD may come from its ability to reduce neuron excitability by working on the GPR55, ENT-1, and TRPV1 receptors, otherwise known as the orphan G protein-coupled receptor-55, equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1, and the Transient receptor potential vanilloid-1. Interestingly, the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has approved a prescription CBD medication called Epidiolex to help treat Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes, two rare forms of epilepsy. The FDA also approved Epidiolex to help treat seizures caused by tuberous sclerosis complex, a genetic disorder. Scientists strongly believe that CBD interacts with the body’s CB1 and CB2 receptors, as well as the three receptors named above, to help alleviate seizures and the symptoms they create.

Other Benefits of CBD

Along with being seen as an antiepileptic, researchers also believe that CBD oil works well against pain, anxiety, and sleep issues. For example, studies prove that CBD oil helps to lower chronic pain by positively impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, lowering harmful inflammation, and actively working with neurotransmitters and the nervous system in general. While CBD can be effective if used on its own, scientists believe it is more effective when used in combination with THC via full-spectrum CBD products. Additionally, when it comes to anxiety and sleep issues, scientists found that the use of CBD both improves sleep and reduces anxiety by invoking relaxation and soothing chronic pain. Interestingly, a 2014 study found that CBD helped to improve REM sleep behavior disorder, or RBD, which is linked to nightmares and poor sleep.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is a form of CBD created when beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and phytonutrients are extracted from hemp or marijuana plants and added to carrier oil. CBD is extracted through many different processes, but the cleanest and most used is the industry preferred CO2 extraction method. Once the extracts are obtained, they are then mixed with a carrier oil, like MCT oil, and natural flavorings to create the final product. CBD oil can come in three different varieties and in a wealth of various strengths and flavors. The three main CBD oil varieties are full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolates. Full-spectrum CBD oils contain all of the components of the hemp plant as well as 0.3% or less THC. Broad-spectrum oils are very much the same as full-spectrum oils, however, they do not contain any THC. Lastly, CBD isolate oils are just what the name implies. With these types of oils, a special process has been used to carefully filter out all of the components of the hemp plant to only leave CBD, or cannabidiol, behind. Typically, full-spectrum and broad-spectrum oils work better against tough health issues as they both invoke the entourage effect and interact best with the ECS.

Does CBD Oil Work for Seizures?

While research on CBD oil and seizures is still ongoing, there is proof that it is effective at alleviating seizures and calming epilepsy. As we discussed above, researchers found that CBD  helped to treat Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, which is most common in two to five percent of pediatric epilepsy cases. Scientists conducted two 14-week clinical trials to determine if Epidiolex would be effective at treating Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. During the first study, scientists found that half of the participants who took 20mg per kg of Epidiolex a day experienced 44 percent fewer seizures when compared to the placebo group who experienced 22 percent fewer seizures. During the second study, scientists compared the results of 10mg per kg and 20mg per kg of Epidiolex a day with participants and found that those on 20mg per kg of the drug experienced 42 percent fewer seizures, and those on 10mg per kg of the medication experienced 37 percent fewer seizures. The placebo group in the second study experienced 17 percent fewer seizures.

A clinical trial was also held for Dravet Syndrome, which compared the effect of 20mg per kg of daily Epidiolex with a placebo group. The study’s participants ranged from 2 to 18 years of age. Scientists found that the group who took the Epidiolex experienced a 39 percent decrease in seizures when compared to the 17 percent decrease in the placebo group.

Epidiolex was also used in a clinical trial for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, a rare condition that affects 1 in 6,000 people and that causes benign tumors to grow throughout the body. If these non-cancerous tumors grow in the brain, then they can cause seizures in some people. During the trial, participants were given 25mg per kg and 50mg per kg of Epidiolex per day while others were given a placebo. Out of 148 participants, 48 percent of those on the medication improved versus a 24 percent improvement in the placebo group.

Along with these three conditions, a 2018 study also looked at the effects of CBD on 55 people with epileptic conditions like CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder, Aicardi Syndrome, Doose Syndrome, and Dup15q Syndrome. At the start of the study, participants averaged 59.4 seizures a month. After just 12 weeks, seizures decreased to 22.5 per month. Their seizures continued to improve throughout the entire 48-week duration of the study.

How to Use CBD Oil for Epilepsy

Before using CBD oil on your own, you should always talk with your primary care doctor or medical specialist so that he or she can help you determine if the CBD oil will have any negative interactions with your current prescription medications. You should use your CBD oil exactly as your doctor or medical specialist recommends. It should be noted that CBD has the potential to negatively mix with some seizure medications. When this happens, the medication can become less effective. You should never use CBD as a replacement for your medication unless you have been specifically instructed by your doctor to do so. Some of the prescription drugs that CBD can interact with are:

  • Clobazam
  • Brivaracetam
  • Zonisamide
  • Rufinamide
  • Stiripentol
  • Valproic Acid
  • Topiramate
  • Clobazam

When it comes to taking a dose of CBD oil, you should be patient and consistent. It will take some time for you to feel the effects of CBD oil on your body. Being consistent also helps you to get the most benefits out of the oil. You should strive to take CBD oil at the same time(s) each and every day to ensure that the levels of CBD in your body remain about the same. When you’re using CBD to help with seizures and epilepsy, you should also never abruptly stop taking it, as this may lead to increased seizure activity. Your doctor or medical specialist is always there to help guide you through the process.

CBD Oil Dosage for Epilepsy & Seizures

Since not everyone’s body is the same, CBD oil doses will vary from person to person. It’s also best to consult with your healthcare professional before starting any new CBD regimen, especially where particular medical conditions like neurological disorders are concerned. The best way to find the right dose for your body and your needs is to start low and go slow. Also, higher strengths of CBD oil tend to work best for tougher health conditions. For example, if you have a 600mg bottle of FAB CBD full-spectrum oil, you should begin by taking half a dropper full once a day. This will roughly equal about 10mg of CBD oil a day. Stick with this dose for about one week before checking in with yourself to decide whether or not you need to increase your dose. Now would also be an optimal time to keep a journal detailing your improvements, lingering issues, and how you are feeling while on the CBD oil. If after one week you feel that you need to increase your dose, then feel free to go up to a half dropper full twice a day. This now equals 10mg of CBD twice a day, or 20mg of CBD a day. Stay with the new dose before checking in with yourself again. If you need to increase, then follow the same pattern until you’ve found the best, most effective dose for your body. Keep in mind that you can also increase the strength of the oil if you need to. Additionally, you may have to adjust both the dose and the oil strength over time.

Dosing Recommendations for Adults

Everyone’s CBD oil dosing will be different. It takes time, patience, and consistency to find the best dose for your body and one that will help alleviate your seizures and calm your epilepsy. In order to find the best dose for your needs, you should follow the detailed method above. If, however, you have been prescribed Epidiolex, you should follow the instructions on the prescription bottle. Typically, the recommended dose of Epidiolex is 2.5mg per kg twice a day. After one week has elapsed, you can increase the dose to 5mg per kg twice a day. Depending on your body’s response and how it tolerates the medication, doctors say the drug can be increased to a maximum amount of 10mg per kg of body weight twice a day.

Where to Buy CBD Oil for Seizures & Epilepsy

Ever since the popularity of CBD has exploded, there’s been an influx of brands in the industry. And while it’s great to have a wealth of brands to choose from, not all brands are created equal. It can be tempting to go with a less-reputable brand that makes cheaper products, but oftentimes these brands cut corners in order to have the lowest prices around. They may use hemp that’s been grown using herbicides and pesticides, or they may use a cheaper extraction method that causes harmful solvents to remain in their final product.

If you’ve been looking to buy CBD oil for your seizures and epilepsy, then it pays to take the time to do your own research into both the product and the brand. If you’re unsure of where to begin, then our list of 15 brands is a great place to start. Once you’ve found some brands that have caught your eye, look deeply into verified customer reviews, industry publications, brand reputation, hemp sources, and even feel free to thoroughly read all third-party lab reports on the brand’s website. It’s important that you know exactly what you are putting into your body as well as the overall reputation of the brand that makes the CBD oil.

These days you can purchase CBD oil from brick and mortar stores and online distributors. Even though brick and mortar stores are easy to get to, you will not be able to thoroughly look into any brand that you’re interested in. Moreover, the staff at the store might not be able to answer your questions in the manner that you’d like them to. If you’re wanting to buy CBD oil, purchasing it online is the best way to go. Not only will you have all the time you need to research the product and the brand, but you’ll also be able to take advantage of coupon codes, special discounts, buying programs, and sales that the brand may be offering.

Final Thoughts on Using CBD for Epilepsy & Seizures

Epilepsy and seizures are extremely difficult to control. Thankfully, with the help of your primary care doctor or medical specialist and the right prescription medication, both issues can be controlled and even alleviated in some cases. Scientific studies are increasingly proving that CBD can be a safe supplemental treatment for seizures and epilepsy. The key to adding CBD oil to your existing medication and supplement routine is to speak with your doctor to first see if you’ll be able to use CBD oil with your prescription(s) and to next discuss what the best oil dose will be for your body and your health needs.

If you’re in the market for a clean and potent CBD oil, the best thing to do is to first take whatever time you need to deeply research both the brand and the product. Don’t be afraid to keep digging until all of your questions are answered to your satisfaction. It’s important to know exactly what you’ll be putting into your body before you begin taking any CBD oil. While there are relatively few side effects of CBD, they are extremely mild at best. Some of the most common side effects linked to CBD oil are drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea, changes in weight, or changes in appetite. If you have been cleared by your doctor to use CBD oil but are concerned about side effects, then don’t hesitate to call him or her to talk more about it and your treatment options.
