Robert (Bob) Mong has served as the President of the University of North Texas at Dallas and its College of Law since 2015. Under his leadership, the university has undergone transformational growth in retention, the number of degrees awarded and enrollment, becoming one of the fastest-growing public universities in Texas.

During his tenure, UNT Dallas expanded its facilities at the southern Dallas main campus and the downtown Dallas law school. Through UNT Dallas’ numerous community service initiatives in urban Dallas County, the university increased its visibility and influence and operates with a compelling vision to provide students with a pathway to upward socioeconomic mobility.

Mong paved the way for UNT Dallas to open its first residence hall in 2017 and a $63 million Student Center in Fall 2019. The state-of-the-art facility includes a one-stop-shop for student services, expansive study spaces, citywide views, and became the hub of student activity and the university’s most identifiable building. Mong also ushered in the UNT Dallas Rail Station on the DART Blue Line and in 2019, moved the College of Law into the UNT Dallas Law Center, at the former historic Dallas City Hall building, after a $71 million restoration.

Before joining UNT Dallas, Mong worked as a journalist for more than 40 years, most of it at The Dallas Morning News, where he served as managing editor and editor-in-chief. He also gained considerable business experience as the paper’s general manager, and as CEO of the Messenger-Inquirer, a daily newspaper in Owensboro, Ky.

Mong was awarded the National Empathy Award, given by the Volunteers of America. He also served multiple times as a Pulitzer Prize juror, including once as chair of the Gold Medal Public Service Committee, and once as chair of the Photography Committee. During his time managing The Dallas Morning News, the paper won nine Pulitzer Prizes and was named finalist 16 times.

Mong currently co-chairs the Southern Dallas Task Force of the Dallas Regional Chamber, a committee that raises the visibility of the business and entrepreneurial efforts in southern Dallas County.

He is a graduate of Haverford College and attended Stanford University’s Executive Program in the Graduate School of Business.
