A Reachable Retreat

In the latest push to discover a serene, out-of-the-ordinary place to reset and unplug, Oklahoma has become a welcome and reachable sanctuary not only for Dallas, but all of Texas. Big sky, tall trees, fresh mountain air—Oklahoma has it all, and the Sky High cabin at 566 Moonshiner Springs Trail in Broken Bow is a picture-perfect example. The decision to claim it will be an easy one. Deciding whether to use it as a weekend retreat or to make it your permanent address will be more challenging.

Aptly named, Sky High is a luxurious, two-story modern cabin on Carter Mountain overlooking Oklahoma’s Ouachita National Forest. The new, contemporary cabin was built in early 2020 in Broken Bow’s coveted Cabins of Carter Mountain community. There’s plenty to love about the cabin’s charming interior, but its outdoor amenities are reason enough to tour this stunner. Sky High features an expansive—as in 1,000 square feet expansive—covered deck overlooking the forest, complete with a cozy living area, fireplace/firepit, flatscreen television, and ceiling fans. There’s also a most welcome mosquito mist system that enables you to enjoy it all summer. Additional space at the bottom of the property is great for a boat or overflow/guest parking.

The 1,814-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath cabin is fully furnished inside and outside—all you have to do is show up. Expansive vaulted ceilings with floor-to-ceiling windows provide breathtaking views and an abundance of natural light. The kitchen opens to the dining and living areas and features stainless-steel appliances; handsome, black-leathered granite countertops; and designer lighting. Wood flooring is found throughout, and a large stone fireplace anchors the living area. Upstairs, the primary bedroom features more windows and access to a private covered patio. Spacious and warm, large barn doors grant access to the primary bath, complete with a glass-enclosed double shower, two vanities, and a free-standing soaking tub—just the spot after a long hike.

The secondary loft-style bedroom is perfect for the kids or guests, complete with two built-in twin beds and a small kitchenette with a sink, cabinetry/bar, and built-in mini-fridge. It also features a full bath and a small game room-style living space. There’s plenty of room to stretch out or play a game of pool—the current entertainment of choice. Just outside of the secondary bedroom/living area is another upper-level deck with a large hot tub and lounge area.

Now, there’s another decision to make—which deck to enjoy first?
