Sunglasses are a staple of summer, whether you prefer a subdued pair that goes with everything or statement frames that anchor an outfit. You may have a tried-and-true pair that’s lasted you through the years, but styles change, as do prescriptions. It might just be time to update your look.

So what’s in style this summer? “Our Dallas customers are choosing frames that are unique, and one-of-a-kind,” says Morgan Gianni, owner of local luxury eyewear boutique Fashion Optical. “They are not necessarily looking for a specific brand, but more a style of frame.”

Gianni prides himself on Fashion Optical’s curated collection, from classic and sophisticated frames (think Tom Ford or Celine) to daring and trendy designs (from lines like Gucci or Marni). Gianni has a long history of traveling to New York City and Paris to scout the latest and greatest styles. Now, he says, buyers come to him, hoping to feature their lines in his Oak Lawn storefront.

He remains selective with colors, designers, and styles, while ensuring that his selection of frames can fit any budget. “Sunglasses are an investment,” says Gianni.

Ready to find your new favorite pair? Take a cue from Gianni’s style guide below, or stop by Fashion Optical for a one-on-one styling consultation from Gianni himself.

WOMEN

Geometric

Geometric frames come in standout angles and shapes: think exaggerated cat-eye, daring triangular, and even quirky octagon frames. Geo frames were staples on the runway for the summer 2019 season at Gucci, Marni, and beyond.

Gucci “Tortoise Square-Frame”
Marni “Dalí”
Marni “Sunrise”
Marni “Facet”

Acetate

Acetate frames’ transparency catches the light and ensures all eyes are on you. These frames also weigh less than traditional metal, offering a breezy feel for summer.

Celine “Butterfly”
Tom Ford “Aristotle”
Tom Ford “Karina”

Gold / Rose Gold

Pretty, feminine metallic frames are all the rage for 2019. The warm tones in both gold and rose gold are a perfect match for your summer tan.

Celine “Metal Frame 02”
Tom Ford “Charlotte”
Tom Ford “West Gold Plated.” Limited Edition

Colorblocking

This stylish sunglasses trend boasts lenses and frames in complementary colors (think orange and pink, blue and purple, or yellow and green).

Marni “Rothko”
Marni “Miro”

Monochrome

The monochrome look is an easy way to incorporate quirky hues in a way that still looks pulled together, thanks to the color cohesiveness of the frames and lenses.

Lanvin “Spud”
Gucci “Square-Frame”

MEN

Vintage/Aviator

The James Dean look dominated the runways for summer 2019, and classic ’50s aviators never truly go out of style. This frame choice is a safe bet if you’re looking to make an investment.

Tom Ford “Georgia” (Leather-Wrapped Frames)
Tom Ford “Marko”

Double Bridges

This frame style has extra structural integrity thanks to the double bridge. If you tend to be hard on your sunglasses, this may be the style for you.

Tom Ford “Holt”
Tom Ford “Ivan”
