What measures can I take to protect my vision for a lifetime?
It is imperative that adults have checkups or eye health physicals every year to screen for conditions like dry eye, glaucoma, and retina problems. Diabetics especially need to be monitored very closely. Good vision makes such a positive difference in your quality of life. Be sure to care for and protect it during your lifetime.

Why does our vision get worse as we get older?
As the lens behind the pupil of our eye ages, it hardens and becomes denser. This makes it more difficult to focus, particularly up close. This is why we start needing reading glasses in our 40s and 50s. Today, many patients elect to have a refractive lens replacement procedure to regain their full range of vision. As a result, most patients no longer need glasses or contacts to see close-up or far away. Too, they’ll never need cataract surgery.

Are there differences in LASIK depending on who you choose for your doctor? Absolutely. The differences come in two areas: technology and certified surgical expertise. My practice uses a state-of-the-art laser with the latest FDA approval because it is considered the most advanced. The laser actually adapts to the unique curvature of your eyes, so your LASIK is customized exactly to the special needs of your eyes. It is important to choose a surgeon who is certified specifically in LASIK. The American Board of Eye Surgeons reviews each doctor’s techniques and results before awarding certification. With this certification, patients can be confident their doctor has met the highest standards of treatment and results.

Do your vision correction surgery patients experience pain?
Not at all. We only perform all-laser, no-blade LASIK. Patients are thrilled with the results and often comment that if they had known how easy it was, they would have done it sooner. LASIK only takes about 15 minutes per eye. Patients are surprised when we tell them the procedure is over because they say they didn’t feel a thing. We hear the same comments from our lens implant and cataract patients.

What are High Technology Lenses?
The Light Adjustable Lens, Synergy, Symfony, and Vivity are examples of High Technology intraocular lens implants which are used to provide a continuous range of vision for far-away, intermediate, and close-up distances. We are able to turn back time by minimizing the eye’s natural process of accommodation and reducing or eliminating your dependence on contact lenses, bifocals, or reading glasses at the time of cataract surgery. It’s the best option available to eliminate the need for reading glasses and contact lenses.

Under the direction of president and chief surgeon Jeffrey Whitman, M.D., the Key-Whitman Eye Center has been recognized as a leading eye care facility since 1961, providing LASIK eye laser surgery for vision correction as well as general ophthalmic services. A full range of progressive eye care services are facilitated by an extraordinary group of experienced physicians, all board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. The doctors are among a few select surgeons in North Texas credentialed in the use of Light Adjustable Lens, Synergy, Symfony, and Vivity. Dr. Whitman, a recipient of the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award, is the current president of the American College of Eye Surgeons, and he was recognized by his peers in D Magazine as one of the Best Doctors in Dallas since 2002. He is one of the most experienced cataracts and refractive surgeons in the North Texas area and a national leader in the implantation of the accommodating Light Adjustable Lens, Synergy, Symfony, and Vivity and also specializes in the ReZoom® and ReSTOR® multifocal lenses. He was one of the first surgeons in Texas to be trained in LASIK eye surgery for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Using a combination of Wavefront analysis and treatment with the all-laser, blade-free IntraLase, the Key-Whitman team has improved the precision and predictability of LASIK laser eye surgery.
