What is IVF?
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) simply means fertilization outside the human body. It is the ultimate strategy in treating infertility. Eggs are combined with sperm in the embryology laboratory and grow and develop under the exact same conditions found in the body until they are ready to be placed back into the uterus or frozen for future pregnancies. As women age, the number and quality of eggs decrease. IVF can preserve future fertility by freezing eggs or embryos. Detection of inherited (sometimes fatal) genetic diseases can be accomplished through IVF thus preventing passing on these abnormal genes.

Age Matters!! Age and the reason for not conceiving are the two main factors in a patient’s success.

Do I need IVF? Are there any other options? When should I talk to my doctor?
There are many causes for infertility. A thorough evaluation will uncover most of these causes. A treatment plan to address or overcome these concerns is essential for success. IVF, in some cases, is clearly the best option. Each patient is unique and a treatment plan must be individualized for that patient or couple. If you are 30 years old or younger and have not gotten pregnant after one year of trying or over 30 years old and tried unsuccessfully for six months – you need an in-depth evaluation. Talk with your doctor about your concerns. Your doctor may begin your initial evaluation or refer you to a specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
