Hunting for something to do this weekend? It’s safe to say that the action-packed grand opening for the Box Garden, Plano-based Legacy Hall’s newest outdoor scene, has what you’re looking for. But with so many noteworthy attractions in their lineup – trust us, there’s a lot happening ‑ finding your perfect fit might take a little bit of planning.
We’ve got you covered with a best-of tour for the May 17-20 festivities, but here’s the headliner to plan around on May 18: Local singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe, who has a reputation for daring, exploratory music. You couldn’t pick a better talent to pop the champagne for a new venue built out of reclaimed shipping containers (seriously – this place is worth the trip).
But more on Jaffe in a minute, as this multi-sensory occasion is making our mouths water with its four-day menu of weekend events. Thursday, May 17:
Following the ribbon cutting, the Chris Watson Band kicks off Box Garden’s inaugural evening with a free concert showcasing their blues rock sound. Carlton Provisions will have oak-fired brisket, 5-hour ribs, house-prepared sausage, and more! This is one of Legacy Hall’s new barbeque concepts, and it’s delicious. After a brief DTEOUR for wine and charcuterie (see what we did there?), we’re heading back outside for DJ EJ’s set at 11p.m. It might be a late night. Worth it.
Friday, May 18:
Day 2 is a ticketed event, with TOMKAT’s electric pop show as a 7p.m. appetizer. Then it’s time for the main course: Jaffe. This is the can’t-miss moment of the weekend, as Jaffe and her unique sound are synonymous with the spirit of the event: Collaborative and fresh. While some fans will be clamoring for her timeless hit, “Clementine”, we’re eagerly expecting her markedly different work from 2017 album Bad Baby. Jaffe even teamed up with Unlawful Assembly Brewing Company just for the occasion with the aptly dubbed Bad Baby Ale, a Paloma-inspired wheat beer. So, you know what we’ll be sipping while the sun goes down and the stage lights go up.
Saturday, May 19:
Alright – halfway through. Donning our best music festival hat, we’re arriving early to claim the perfect table for an afternoon of free Texas music by Sleepy Zuhoski, Madison King, Vandoliers, and Kirk Thurmond & The Millennials. When the afternoon heat sets in, we’ll grab the grand opening weekend’s featured frozen cocktail the “Box Garden Plugged In,” which was made in partnership with STUBBORN SODA, using their pineapple cream soda syrup. Reapply our SPF and scarf a Knife Burger so we’re properly fueled for the silent disco at 10:30p.m. Pass us a shot from Lunazul Tequila Bar and call us a cab.
Sunday, May 20:
On Sundays, we brunch. We’ll share donuts from Glazed, a waffle from Press, and fresh green juice from The Juice Bar before making a therapeutic shopping trip through a local farmer’s market filled with curated goods based on the farm-fresh ingredients. Ending the day (and the weekend) with music by Chet Stevens will be bittersweet. But the good news is Legacy Hall will be serving up fresh events at the Box Garden all year long, so our social calendar just got an enviable upgrade.
