Are you going to Scarborough Fair? We’re not talking to parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, though I’m sure you can find them all there. We’re talking to you, dear reader. In its 37th year, a triumph for any relationship, The Scarborough Renaissance Festival is soon to take place in Waxahachie, Texas. But alas, who should so find themselves inspired to attend and what might said fair-goer see? Let’s discuss.

The Beer and Wine Connoisseurs

With 11 pubs and taverns to patronize, a sommelier on site, and a mead produced solely for the festival by local winery La Buena Vida, the palates of those who consider these drinks a form of divine provenance will surely find satisfaction at every turn. There’s so much to taste on any given day while you journey through the grounds and if you need a little more, each weekend boasts four, themed wine tasting that are not just enjoyable, but educational. The tastings last one hour and include demonstrations, how to taste, food pairings and a souvenir glass. Know this. All forms of love concerning wine and beer are destined to be pleased. Or, if you just want a full service bar, they have that at the Rose & Crown.

The Arts and Crafts Lovers (shoppers, too)

The Scarborough Renaissance Festival is renowned for its diverse array of artisans, which are actually selected by a jury. Not just anyone gets in. With more than 200 shoppes, the offerings range from handmade jewelry to fine art pieces, blown glass, perfumes, incense, Texas honey products, candles, and all manner of apothecary. There’s a wide range of apparel, fine silks, as well as demonstrations of glasswork, metalsmithing, pottery and sculpture. On top of that, you can speak to the actual artists to better understand the work. Good luck seeing it all, but know that you are hereby challenged to do so. Be sure to bring money. We don’t think the bartering system is part of this Renaissance homage.

Role Playing and Costume Aficionados

With weapons and armor available, dungeons to visit, monster museums, and even mermaids to converse with, those inclined to embrace the fantasy of 16th century living will feel right in their hearts with so much to fill them up with. Costumes of all sorts are welcome, but not required. There is also archery, jousting, feats of strength and even crossbow games to light your fantasy fire for Renaissance adventure. Each day there is a Parade of the villagers, artisans, nobles and knights, and all royalty that play the part of bringing this theater to life. Dive in for yourself with costume contests and pirate games and maybe they’ll insist you stay. Of special note is the Live the Fantasy Weekend from May 6-7th. Consider yourself informed.

There’s something for anybody and everybody at the Scarborough festival.

The Adventure Hungry Food Lover

The festival is a living, breathing exercise of 16th Century life. Those who seek the pleasure of the plate and all forms of adventure unlike any other will find difficulty knowing where to look next. There are 5 food courts that are serving everything from giant roasted turkey legs, Scottish Eggs, shepherd’s pie and the not-to-be-missed bakery. There’s handmade pastas, crepes, quiches, and the largest selection of food on a stick in Texas. It seems that something for everyone is on another level here.

Handmade crepes are just one of the choices at the festival.

So even if you don’t consider yourself a fit for those four categories, The Scarborough Renaissance Festival of 2017 will find a part of you to share itself with, and you may just find yourself in love as you discover amazing entertainment on the 24 stages, more than 150 costumed performers throughout the “village” of Scarborough, a Human Chess Match, Mermaids and so very much more.
