A Fresh Approach to Facelifts

The FreshLift™ is customized for each patient and can be combined with multiple facial procedures.

Each birthday is proof that, yes, we’re getting older. And although we’ve made peace with this fact (hey, it beats the alternative), we continue to be surprised whenever we discover more fine lines and wrinkles that seemingly pop up overnight, a sagging jawline that suddenly drops even further, and skin that has apparently lost its will to stay in place. “The day you think all-of-the-sudden I look older is the day gravity finally becomes stronger than the elastic fibers in your skin, as aging skin is all about elasticity,” says facial plastic surgeon Dr. John Standefer. “The day you wake up and see a drastic change in the mirror is the day gravity won.”

“The day you wake up and see a drastic change in the mirror is the day gravity won.”

Sure, there are plenty of serums, creams, and other products on the market that can reduce the tell-tale signs of aging. However, the only way to truly turn back the clock is with cosmetic surgery. While the results of facial cosmetic surgery may sound tempting, the actual surgical process isn’t as enticing. Most cosmetic and plastic surgeries require general anesthesia, or “putting the patient under” during the procedure, as well as considerable downtime for recovery.

This doesn’t have to be the price you pay for beauty anymore, thanks to the FreshLift™, a facelift that can be safely performed under local anesthesia. The FreshLift™ repositions tissues that have descended from the cheek into the folds around the mouth and into the jowls along the jaw line. The procedure also addresses the neck by tightening up the muscles underneath the chin after removing the excess fatty tissues in the chin and neck, which gives the best possible profile.

The FreshLift™ is customized for each patient and can be combined with multiple facial procedures, such as a brow lift, rhinoplasty, laser treatments, and fillers. The final selection of procedures is based on what the patient wants and needs, says Dr. Standefer, who has performed more than 7,000 FreshLift™ procedures. Following a thorough evaluation, a determination is made based on a variety of factors, such as the patient’s age and skin quality, addressing problem areas, and what can be done so results are natural-looking. The FreshLift™ also differs from traditional facelifts because it doesn’t produce the stereotypical wind-swept or over-pulled look. The goal, Dr. Standefer says, is to look refreshed…not overdone.

Experience matters when choosing a surgeon to perform any cosmetic procedure, FreshLift™ included. Dr. Standefer says local anesthesia is a safe alternative to general anesthesia for the FreshLift™. The local anesthesia numbs the face while medications, such as a Valium, are used for relaxation. “Local anesthesia is typically safer than general anesthesia and makes the procedure more affordable by eliminating a hospital stay and surgery fees,” he says. “It’s important to make sure cosmetic procedures are performed in an accredited surgery center.”

FreshLift™ patients are home recovering the day of the procedure, and recovery time is usually 10 to 30 days depending upon how many procedures were performed. Pain is easily controlled with oral pain medication that is tapered to only acetaminophen within 48 to 72 hours.

Who is a candidate for FreshLift™? “Anyone can have a FreshLift™,” Dr. Standefer says. “It’ isn’t about age as much as it is about how well the skin has been maintained and the results of gravity on the skin’s elasticity.” Patients who have received “tune-ups” through the years with facials, peels, microdermabrasions, and fillers may not need a FreshLift™ until later in life. One of the best features of the FreshLift™ is that it is customizable, meaning you can fine tune it along the way as needed. “Some patients are candidates in their mid-40s, while others are perfect candidates in the 60s and older,” Dr. Standefer says. “You’re ready for the procedure when you want to look younger without giving away that you’ve had something done.”
