This Sunday, Dallas entrepreneur Nasiba Adilova is teaming up with Bird Bakery’s Elizabeth Chambers Hammer for what is sure to be a lovely and highly curated Halloween party at The Tot Playhouse on West Lovers Lane. Expect cookie decorating courtesy of Chambers Hammer’s Highland Park Village bakery and nontoxic face painting, mask decorating, and other activities that are in keeping with The Tot’s mission: to provide safe, organic, and eco-friendly children’s products that are as fashionable as they are functional.

But ahead of the fete, Adilova was kind enough to share her thoughts on keeping Halloween fun and safe for kids, and of course, some adorable ideas for costumes.

What are some tips to parents concerned about keeping kids safe on Halloween?

Halloween can be scary for a lot of parents. There are concerns over sugar-loaded candy, interactions with strangers, and street safety. It’s important to know what you’re comfortable with and to make plans for the family, especially if you’re trick-or-treating. So just remember to stick to the neighborhoods you’re familiar with and have a planned route set out.

What many people tend to overlook are the dangers lurking in toxic face paints and cheap costumes made with questionable materials. We have some super cute and safe options on The Tot’s Halloween Shop including eco-friendly and vegan face paints made from clay and natural mineral pigments. We also have an absolutely adorable range of handmade locally-made cotton canvas costumes by Lovelane Designs and felt masks and tails by Opposite of Far.

Any cute costume ideas for the kids this year?

We love to dress up for imaginative playtime in our house. This year I think my eldest boy will be either a Lovelane dragon or a knight. We’ve also got an unbelievably cute superhero costume for my baby boy — complete with a cape and all! We’ll get our faces painted, which we’ll also be doing at the Halloween pre-party on Sunday.

Any Halloween traditions your family always keeps?

We set up a display in front of our house and watch the excited trick or treaters come in. Traditionally, our friends come over to hang out at our place to play around, take lots of photos, and just have fun. It’s such a great time of year and especially now that my eldest son is old enough to really enjoy and take part in it.  And of course we’ll be enjoying some delicious and healthy Halloween treats. There are so many great options that are still taste great that are made with processed sugar substitutes like maple syrup, honey, or coconut/beet sugars – so we won’t be missing out at all!
