Step Into Snider Plaza’s Uber Cool Cicada Collection

|

Walking into Cicada Collection for the first time is like leaving the state. A hiatus from all the colorful, college-friendly shops surrounding it in Snider Plaza, this Santa Fe-based boutique caters to the confident and fashion-forward. No, not the trendy girls who buy the latest designer garments off the mannequins, but the risk-takers, the high-low mixers, and the ladies who love quality more than a designer logo. Owners Irina Ross and Anne Mulvaney stock a monochromatic palette of architectural pieces from German-based Ivan Grundahl, Icelandic Elm Design, San Francisco’s Harput’s Own, and other off-the-grid designers. Cynthia Barnhouse, (who looked effortlessly cool in structured white skirt and denim jacket during my visit) manages the Dallas boutique and has a hand in tailoring the spring selection to Dallas’ hot summers. Expect to find prices worthy of collectible pieces: $98 for tanks and tees up to $826 for off-the-runway skirts.

Accessories are in small numbers, but great. An ombre scarf, a black and white satchel, a pleated ruffle harness (in. love.), and studded belts by Beryll.

Cicada stocks a few pieces from the San Fransisco line Harput's Own. This leather shift dress has a peek-a-boo scoop back under a long, sheer panel. So superhero. So sexy.
With the exception of a few colorful garments, Cicada racks are beautifully monochromatic in blacks, grays, whites, and creams. The draping Verlaine blouse, left, would be killer over jeans or dressy trousers. The Elm Design is as versatile as it is cool. (And that's very.)
Cicada took the trendy midi skirt trend and amped it up by stocking off-the-runway Ivan Grundahl pieces with unusual textures and shapes.
