Ask Raya: Best Body Moisturizer

“The weather’s getting cold, which I love, but my skin is getting dry and flaky, which I don’t love. (Especially my legs and arms.) I’m in the market for a really good moisturizer. Any ideas?”–Flaky

Ever since I was responsible for the 2009 winter D Beauty beauty page (which featured winter-proof creams), I’ve been on the moisturizer beat. I’ve tried a ridiculous amount of product, and I’m happy to let you in on my favorites. Start by exfoliating skin in the shower with a loofah, wash cloth, or salt/sugar scrub. Then slather on a dollop of one of the following.

If you’re rich, go with the $230 jar of La Mer, and smooth it everywhere. It’s thick (like Mom’s cold cream-thick), but leaves skin with a dewy look that lasts for hours.

If you’re less rich, go with the $35 tube of Bliss’ Body Butter. (It comes in a handful of flavors.) The lotion has a medium-thick consistency and really absorbs into the skin. I love slathering it on after the shower in the morning. I can still put clothes on afterward without feeling sticky.

If you want to go cheaper, I also heart Lavanila’s $25 Healthy Body Butter. Every product from this line includes vanilla, so everything smells delish. These tubes are thicker than Bliss’. I like to use mine before bed to wake up with soft-as-a-baby skin.

For $20, go with Ahava’s Mineral Hand Cream. I love everything from this company, from the makeup to the foot cream. I use the hand cream all over my driest parts (knees, elbows, etc.), and within hours of application, my skin feels nourished.

A drugstore favorite is Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. I love the natural scent and non-greasy feel. It’s great for times when skin is dry or sensitive skin, too. (Or  both.) Plus, it’ll cost you about $6. Woo hoo!

Happy lotioning.
