A Better Manicure (Continued)

Raya recently answered a reader question about some good places to get manis and pedis and I wanted to add one to the mix that I went to last week, Hawaiian Nail Bar. I was a little fearful of the Hawaiian theme as I entered; themed businesses can very easily cross that fine line between cute and cheesy, but I’m happy to report this place got it right. I was greeted by friendly a host-of-sorts and told him I wanted a pedicure. After perusing their selection of Essie and OPI polishes said host led me to a cushy massage chair and I immediately dipped my feet into the warm, inviting water. What surprised me though was that all the tubs were covered in plastic, for sanitary reasons. Although it felt a little funny, I appreciated the fact that I didn’t have to worry about going home with someone else’s bacteria making a home between my toes.

Next, I was given a menu of FREE alcoholic (and non-alcoholic) drinks to choose from. The mango smoothie (with alcohol, please) was quite tasty. I’m sure they don’t use the best vodka in the world but hey, it was good and did I mention free? They had beer and wine available as well. I only imbibed in one drink but saw other clients requesting seconds with no problem.

Overall, my pedi was great. It was slightly annoying when, at first, my technician kept asking if I wanted any “add-ons” but he was fine when I said no to each one and didn’t push it. For a mere $25 I got a great polish job with an exfoliating scrub and a nice massage. My only constructive criticism would be to suggest they make the smoothies in another (enclosed) room. The the sound of the blender going on and off every so often was a bit unsettling as I tried to relax.

For a nail salon, this place is big and the fact that they have so many pedi chairs – at least twenty – means that large groups can be easily accommodated. (Be sure to ask about their luau parties, perfect for birthdays or weddings.) In addition to nail services, facials, waxing, spray tans, foot reflexology, microdermabrasion and massages are also offered. Let us know if you try it, and what you think!
