I’m gonna go ahead and give this one a big, fat “F”.

  • Kristin

    I agree with Rarolyn!

  • Leta

    No! This is bad.

  • Ashton

The design makes them even worse!

  • Amanda Austin

Ummm…let’s leave the man tights to the 16th century please!

  • I’d like to interject a bit of balance here. It’s unfortunate that you’ve drawn your conclusions on men’s legwear completely from the e-MANcipate website. While the fashion aspect is one perspective, it’s far from representative of the majority of men who are wearing tights in increasing numbers each year.

I work for ActivSkin Legwear for Men (, the first company to sell tights and pantyhose made especially for men. We’ve been doing so for 10 years with consistent sales growth each of those years. The guys who wear our legwear do so for legitimate, practical reasons, including leg support, warmth-without-bulk for outdoor athletes, and base layer for outdoorsmen in cold climates.

Without going into further details, I would direct you to The Nylon Gene (, a blog I host that’s designed to explain the practical benefits of men’s legwear and document the growth of this admittedly unusual trend.

While e-MANcipate tries to present ‘mantyhose’ as a fashion statement, we don’t see that as being a primary avenue for growth of this trend. Many men, such as myself, who have been wearing ActivSkin legwear for a while do tend to start wearing them with shorts during the warmer months. However, that comes more from a reluctance to giving up shorts wearing just because of a health/wellness need for legwear, than it is to make a fashion statement.

Steve, glad you posted on here. I can absolutely see reasons why men would wear legwear, particularly for health benefits. My comment targets the fashion aspect only. I’m still not sure I’d dig a guy in tribal print tights and khakis. For warmth and support to get through activities, I’m all for it.

  • Ray

Sorry, Steve, but MantyHose are still panty hose no matter how you spin it.

Base layer? Low bulk? I prefer good ‘ol fashioned cotton or wool long johns, which are made of natural fibers, not petroleum products. And they don’t smell after you sweat.

Leg support? Um, what? As in Restless Leg Syndrome?

    I agree with Christina. Fail.

  • Den

Ray – have you considered cycling in sub-zero temperatures? Cotton, which aborbs sweat and then freezes, is best avoided, so long johns are out. In any event are usually too thick for going under cycling tights, so a ‘wicking’ layer underneath that is very thin (and cheap!) is ideal. Hence many cyclists quietly wear tights, and it is an open secret that many men wear in extreme cold for another layer, but who aren’t living on the same planet as ’emancipate’, have no intention whatsoever of being ‘girlie’ and otherwise don’t have a ‘thing’ about tights or want to carry a handbag.

If you have misgivings about men’s tights as fashion feminizing men, I would share them, but it is unfair and inaccurate to tar everybody with the same brush!

Those are actually kind of hot! I think I am going to buy a pair for my husband for Christmas. I was behind a young man at a bank in Florida this weekend and he had on some tan ones.

  • Den

Sara – you are not actually a man pretending to be a women to make it look as though women are in favor of this, are you?

I’m more than a little bit suspicious that you noticed a man in a bank wearing them. Does this actually happen in real life? I know there are banks, and men too, but when they go inside them they are never seen wearing tights unless they are robbing the place. Or is that what you had in mind?

  • Sara

What kind of name is Den? Is that short for something, or short for something you are maybe lacking? Yes, I am a female and have been married for 21 years. I was actually standing in line at an ATM and noticed a man in his mid-twenties wearing them. I thought it was appealing to see a “mans” legs look that way. Den, you kind of actually have a childness behavior in the way you speak. I do support guys that are willing to try what us women have been enjoying for years.

  • Den

Sara – I stand corrected! I’m afraid I have seen a number of discussions of this topic recently where, with some thought, you can see that female contributions waxing lyrical about men wearing tights were almost certainly from men pretending.
I have myself worn tights in the past for winter cycling, but have a real problem with this being done as a public fashion statement – I don’t think it looks right on a man, too feminine.
I am sure we would both agree though that the weirdo/fetish angle is to be rejected, but this brings a real stigma with it and is the reason I have abandonned tights for substitutes which in no sense could be said to be cross-dressing.
As for the name Den, as this is the measurement in Europe for the thickness of tights (40 Den etc.), I thought it appropriate.
    I’ll get my coat …..

  • Ned

Den – I think you were probably right about ‘Sara’ really being a man! The word ‘enjoying’ gives it away.

I have no objections. I have seen several guys wearing tights and leggings in the gym. I noticed also a guy wearing tights when he was with his girlfried. I thought maybe he was dark skinned. Then I double taked and he was wearing black tights during the basketball season around December. Another was with shorts and sandals with leggings under shorts. It is in and with sports brands like Under Armour, Nike, Reebok, Addidas, and New Balance, there is big money in sports retail.

  • Nedareg

One year on and this is still as far from mainstream as it ever was. Men wearing tights just ain’t happening, and the tide seems to have gone out!
