When Dr. Dirk Frater became an internal medicine physician 35 years ago, he began his career in emergency medicine, transitioning to private practice later to spend more time with family. After nearly a decade in private practice, he realized a high patient volume prohibited him from caring for patients at the level he felt they deserved. He opened E. Barrow Medical Group, a concierge medicine practice, in 2008 and hasn’t looked back. “Concierge medicine returns the practice of medicine to how it used to be, based on personal relationships with patients where you get to know them well enough that they feel comfortable calling at any time,” he says. “It restores doctor/patient trust.”
E. Barrow Medical Group is named after Dr. Frater’s grandmother, Ethel Barrow, who was a physician. “She always instilled in me that being a good doctor is about how you take care of people,” he says. “The healthcare system has been slowly degrading around us, and navigating the process without someone guiding you can make getting care even more stressful. At our practice, everyone is committed to the idea of doing whatever we can to make things better for our patients.”
