Dr. David Barnett is often described as compassionate. Down to earth. Attentive. Add to the list this year, grateful. “I am honored to have been included in the inaugural D Magazine Hall of Fame,” he says. “I appreciate the trust and respect of my peers who have voted me a Best Doctor for 20 years.”
Dr. Barnett is quick to recognize everyone who has been an integral part of his success through the years. He knows that without their support, he wouldn’t be able to devote his time to his passion—helping patients. “I want to thank my office staff, physician assistant, and nurses who have made it possible to serve my patients,” he says.
Dr. Barnett’s path to becoming a neurosurgeon began early in life. Growing up in Texas, he was diagnosed at age 7 with Legg Calvé-Perthes disease which prevented him from walking for more than three years. His doctors became his role models. Today, Dr. Barnett is chief of the department of neurological surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, where he has practiced medicine since 1996. Board certified in neurosurgery, he specializes in the diagnosis and conservative treatment of disc herniations, degenerative disorders, and injury-related spinal disorders. He understands the individual needs patients have when faced with a neurological disorder and endeavors to educate his patients about their condition and treatment options.
When Dr. Barnett isn’t busy partnering with patients in their care, you’ll likely find him hunting, fishing, and spending time with family on his multigenerational ranch in West Texas.
