Ring ‘Er Up    |   Jan Strimple

founder of Jan Strimple Productions

I was standing at a
cash register at a grocery store in Kent, Ohio. It was a single cash register, and everyone would come through my lane, and I would ring them up, bag their groceries, and occasionally run out and pump gas. If it was really boring and there was nothing going on, then I’d go out and stock shelves. I’d do a little bit of whatever.

But the best thing that came from the job? My amazing and wonderful husband. He literally was playing at the Twin Lakes Country Club across the street from Hill’s Grocery. The Racing Form, if I remember correctly, was to be delivered by 4 o’clock each day. So Dan came a couple minutes before four, and it had not yet been delivered. It was running late that day. It was very serendipitous. If it would have been delivered on time, he would’ve bought it, and walked out the door. I didn’t have to go out and pump gas at the moment, so I decided to talk to this young man. I bought him a seven-cent push-up Popsicle.

I was a fashionista when I was young. I made most my clothes. That day, I had this long skirt on, and it was unbuttoned up to the thigh and there was an elephant pin on it. It was foreboding of my future.
