Where to Do Some Arts-Related SightSeeing

NICE CVB MAN SAYS: Take a walking tour of downtown Dallas. Visit the Old Red Museum, where the CVB operates a tourists’ information center. They’ll be happy to hook you up with a walking map of the sights.

WE SAY: Well, okay, sure. A walking tour of downtown. We hadn’t thought of that before. But with all due respect, there’s a reason ESPN picked downtown Fort Worth over downtown Dallas as the base of its Super Bowl broadcasts. If you want to have a walk around, knock yourself out, but we’d suggest that you ride the elevator up to Wolfgang Puck’s Five Sixty, high atop Reunion Tower, the landmark you’ll recognize from the opening title sequence from Dallas. The food is great, and the view from the rotating restaurant 560 feet above the city is rather impressive. Really, though, we’re trying to move beyond the image of us that that TV show brought to the world. Would you ever guess that just minutes from downtown you could see the country’s largest urban hardwood forest, where last year the winner of a photography contest sponsored by the Dallas Morning News caught an image of a coyote howling in the snow? The Trinity River Audubon Center will show you a side of the city that won’t appear in the shots leading into and out of commercial breaks on the FOX broadcast of the game.
