Where to Eat the Most Delicious Tex-Mex

NICE CVB MAN SAYS: The downtown El Fenix.

WE SAY: Miguel Martinez, the founder of El Fenix, pretty much single-handedly invented Tex-Mex cuisine in 1918, and that location, in operation since 1925, is a classic one. You won’t be disappointed. But most locals will point you to Mia’s. Not only is the restaurant progenitor of local chains Mi Cocina, Taco Diner, and Manny’s, but it was also Tom Landry’s favorite spot—which made it all the more uncouth when new Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, preparing to fire Landry, celebrated with his new coach, Jimmy Johnson, at Mia’s. A Dallas Morning News photography intern snapped a picture. A framed clip from the paper hangs in the restaurant today. We recommend Mia’s brisket tacos to anyone who hasn’t tried them. Two corn tortillas filled with moist, smoky brisket, Monterey Jack cheese, grilled onions, and poblano peppers—they’re a gooey, meaty, tender homage to Mexico and Texas.
