Where to Get the Best Margarita in Town

NICE CVB MAN SAYS: “That’s difficult to say,” he said, before suggesting On the Border (many, many, many locations).

WE SAY: On the Border does serve margaritas. That’s true. And you can buy clothes at Walmart. But we wouldn’t suggest that you shop at the latter for a frock, and we wouldn’t suggest the former for a margarita. The oddest thing about our nice CVB man’s suggestion is that it goes against the all-too-obvious: Mariano’s Hacienda. Mariano Martinez actually invented the frozen margarita. The machine he used in 1971 now sits in the Smithsonian, which calls it “a classic example of the American entrepreneurial spirit.” So for historical precedence alone, we’d point you there. But for an amazing margarita with a swift kick, we suggest the Maximo Heat at Maximo. It’s a gorgeous green concoction of sweet agave syrup mixed with freshly squeezed lime juice, Sauza Blanco (or your choice of tequila from their list), triple sec, and muddled raw jalapeños shaken and served on the rocks. Warning: not for sissies.
