Sidedish: Crooked Tree Coffeehouse Keeps Dallas Weird—And Wired

|
photography by Kevin Hunter Marple

Restored old house, comfy faded couches, free wi-fi, and the constant hisssss of milk being foamed. Crooked Tree Coffeehouse embodies the ideal of the indie coffeehouse. Co-owners Sarah Momary and Kristyn Smith, who were roommates at Texas A&M, chucked the drudgery of their jobs as nurse and bank worker, respectively, to open this homey oasis south of McKinney Avenue in Uptown. “In Dallas, everything’s a chain, and we didn’t want to have to move to Austin to get that independent coffeehouse feel,” Smith says. They get Fair Trade organic beans from Buy Well in Colorado Springs and cinnamon rolls from local baker Covert Vegan. On any afternoon, you’ll find a scattering of twentysomethings gazing intently into their Dells as they reach for their lattes, served in thick, brightly colored ceramic cups. 2414 Routh St. 214-953-1142.
