The Men Behind the Curtain

AFI’s International Film Festival comes to Dallas March 22. And, yeah, it’s as big a deal as the name implies (not just because D Magazine is a co-sponsor). Expect 150 features, documentaries, and shorts showing in local theatres, as well as parties, lectures, music, and panel discussions. The three guys behind it all say the same thing: they couldn’t do it without each other. (How sweet.) Managing director Tearlach Hutcheson (left) is in charge of delivering CEO Michael Cain’s vision. Cain (right), a Sundance winner, started the Deep Ellum Film Festival and, because of this, proved to AFI he could run something bigger. But both men depend on Liener Temerlin. A long-time Dallas advertising guru, Temerlin is a board member of AFI and the creator of its “100 Years…100 Movies” series. He raised $4 million for the film festival in less than a year. Proof that, when fundraising, it helps to have the likes of Ross Perot Jr., Ruth Altshuler, and Target’s Michael Francis on speed dial. It also helps to befriend Sydney Pollack and the family of Gregory Peck. Each are scheduled to be at the festival, as are Lauren Bacall, composer Marvin Hamlisch, and director David Lynch, among others. It runs March 22 through April 1.
