George and Sophia Fox spill the beans on their father, ROBERT FOX, who writes about Paris Vendome on p. 39. GEORGE: “Before Daddy became a food writer at D Magazine, he used to be a food critic in Europe.” SOPHIA: “He’s very old and has eaten all over the world. That’s a lot of food.” GEORGE: “Dad was educated at private schools and at Oxford, which makes him talk funny.” SOPHIA: “George had his first oyster when he was 10 months old. Luckily, he has forgotten about it.” GEORGE: “We are half British and half American. Daddy’s the British half.” SOPHIA: “We really prefer European varietals to Shirley Temples and go more for classic rather than fusion or rock.” GEORGE: “It must be something we inherited.”

Writer ELLISE PIERCE, who is also an intrepid shopper, once dragged an oversized wicker basket filled with Moroccan pottery through airports from Casablanca to Dallas. But she met her match when she went to New York to profile Rene Syler (see p. 58). “Shopping is like a sport to Rene,” Ellise says. “She’s lightning fast and bargains ruthlessly. We hit a flea market on the Upper West Side, and she filled the car’s trunk within an hour with mirrors, jewelry, a wrap skirt, and an African mask. I was just getting started.” To subsidize her addiction, Ellise also writes for Jane, Newsweek, People.

Contributing designer DAVID RADABAUGH recently moved to Dallas from Ohio, where the average January temperature is a balmy 28.7 degrees. He earned a master of fine arts in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design and holds degrees in visual communications and philosophy. In addition to his freelance work for clients such as AIGA and Zamboni, David has managed a digital media laboratory and tortured hundreds of university students with his typography and design classes. He’s traveled from Barcelona to Istanbul, crossed the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on horseback, and competed (unsuccessfully) in one motorsports event. David now makes his home in Denton with his sweetheart Lari, two pear trees, and three cats.

MATTHEW WAKEM is a freelance photographer based in New York City, and he accompanied Ellise Pierce on her behind-the-scenes journey with Rene Syler, beginning on p. 58. Matthew’s work has appeared in a number of national magazines, including Esquire, Marie Claire, Maxim, and Blue. He also photographs programs combating blindness around the world in an ongoing documentary project
with Helen Keller Worldwide. To see more of his work, visit www.matthewwakem.com.
