Readers talk back about Wright Sigmund, the Catholic bishop, why we live here, and patriotic duty.

Local Hero

For our February cover story, “My Brother’s Keeper,” Dan Michalski wrote about his former St. Mark’s student Wright Sigmund, who nearly lost his life in a car bombing. The lead suspect in the case is Sigmund’s half-brother, and the exclusive story revealed how one young man’s ideas about family were turned upside down.

I wrestled for the Kinkaid School of Houston in high school. Although Wright Sigmund was a member of our rival wrestling team—St. Mark’s—I considered him to be not only a fierce competitor, but also a friend. While I cannot fathom the ordeal that he has suffered, after years of watching him on the mat, I can easily imagine the depth to which Wright reaches inside himself to rise against it every day. Thank you so much for an excellent portrayal of an extraordinary individual.

I JUST WANTED TO SEND KUDOS TO D MAGAzine and Dan Michalski for the article about Wright Sigmund. It was an excellent piece and the reason I subscribe to D. It’s good to see you can have some interesting articles instead of just ripping our sports-franchise owners or telling me who is the best podiatrist in Dallas. I am certainly renewing my subscription. Now can I get on The List?

Beyond the Call of Duty

In February’s “Patriotism on a Plate,” food editor Nancy Nichols recounted her trip to Uzbekistan, where she fed American troops alongside local restaurateurs Harvey Gough and Gene Street, among others. At times, the company was as tough as the terrain.

Thank you for the support of our forces in Karshi-Khanabad, Uzbekistan. All of the feedback confirms that your team’s efforts were an overwhelming success that brought a touch of America to CentCom troops serving in a very austere environment. The positive effect on their morale and well-being is immeasurable. Again, thanks for your continued patriotism, generosity, and support of our fight against global terrorism.
GEN. TOMMY R. FRANKS U.S. Army

Nancy Nichols is such a saint.  I went to Goff’s one time and was treated so rudely that I never went back. I can’t believe she went all that way, took a steak in the face, and still talks to Harvey Gough. The article really made me laugh. Congratulations to D for doing its patriotic duty.

It’s Not Why I Live Here

In the lighthearted February feature “Why We Live Here,” we listed 59 of our favorite reasons—some sincere, others ironic—for living in Dallas.

As a recent transplant, I was excited to read the article containing the top reasons to live in Dallas, hoping you might point out some wonderful features of Dallas that I had missed. Much to my surprise, your list was totally offensive. Strip clubs? Men-only golf clubs? How embarrassing for Dallas, and how surprising for a magazine that has an intelligent audience (or so I thought).

A Letter From Mattie!

In her February review [Taste: “Seafood Surprise”], Nancy Nichols praised Oceanaire Seafood Room in the Westin Hotel, which restored her faith in new Dallas restaurants.

I enjoyed Nancy Nichols’ review of Oceanaire. I had the chef on my show, and he was great. I laughed at her chagrin that there are so few fabulous new restaurants. I’ll keep reading till you find them. Until then, it’s Mia’s, Marty’s, and Green Papaya for me! MATTIE ROBERTS, HOST

So Private It Wasn’t There

Last November, we presented the first-ever ranking of the top private high schools in Dallas. We also published the story as part of a package about local private schools in our 2003 Newcomers Guide.

Those collecting information on private high schools for the November 2002 cover story didn’t do their homework. The omission of All Saints’ Episcopal School was disappointing. We have 800 students and just won SPC Division II titles in field hockey, football, and boys basketball. We are digging into a R.A.N.G.E. Project that will protect and preserve natural wetlands on our campus. And we’re directing a project that has embarked on writing historical biographies supported by the Bass Curriculum Foundation. The situation failed to improve when D Magazine managed to overlook All Saints’ a second time by making the same mistake in the 2003 Newcomers Guide. This oversight demonstrates poor reporting and creates doubts about the quality of the entire report. BETTY HARVEY Director of Marketing and Public Relations All Saints’ Episcopal School

The Battle Over the Bishop

In his February Publisher’s Note [“Why Won’t This Bishop Go?”], Wick Allison called for the resignation of Bishop Charles Grahmann and encouraged all Catholics to support the Church through charity, not the diocese.

I read your Publisher’s Note and “wow” and “right on” are the first thoughts that came to mind. My wife and I concluded over a year ago that the only thing the Catholic Church seems to understand is the almighty dollar, and the only way to get real change is to starve the monster financially. Hence, like you suggested, we are supporters of the Catholic Foundation and Catholic Charities. We refuse to support anything that supports Bishop Grahmann, and we encourage our friends to do likewise. Keep up the pressure. HOWARD MANNING JR. Plano

As a life long Catholic born in Dallas, I wanted you to know that you have my wholehearted support in your efforts to oust Bishop Grahmann. We will never know how many people he has driven away from the Church with his autocratic obstinacy. FRANK RIBELIN Dallas

Thanks to Wick Allison for his continuous efforts to bring the Catholic Church back to some semblance of honor. Those of us in the “great unwashed” have had very little recourse. JANONE WOOD Willis Point, Texas

EDITOR’S NOTE: In our March feature about Frisco [“Welcome to Boomtown”], we misidentified Mayor Mike Simpson, who graciously agreed to ride the carousel at Stonebriar Centre during our photo shoot. We regret the error.

COMING NEXT MONTH
In our exclusive report, Dallas Police finally speak out. Plus, the best attorneys in town and top spots for picking up dates.
