Making the Connection…
AS SOON AS’ 1 SAW THE COVER. I IMMEDIATELY dug up and dusted off my old Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass album. Whipped Cream & Other Delights. I can hardly believe the coincidence!

EDITOR’S RESPONSE: Thank you, thank you, thank you. As you can see above, the coincidence was intentional.
…and Not Making It
Normally 1 look forward to receiving my copy of D Magazine in the mail. How ever. August was the exception.
[ am sick and tired ol’ being bombarded with women in “seductive, poses” arriving in my mailbox, showing up on my television. trying to seduce me in grocery store lines, and “pouting” at me from billboards along the highway. I am constantly amazed and saddened that too many women still don’t get it!

I FIND IT IRONIC THAT THE COVER FOR YOUR
Top Haste Awards issue was so tasteless. As a subscriber, I usually find your magazine to be top-notch. You really missed the mark this month.

Was the August issue cover photo com-pensation for the absence of a controversial story? Or was it that D Magazine wanted to he equated with the periodical elite being displayed protectively by some grocery chains? Maybe the editorial staff of D fig-ured that the provocative covers of Maxim and Casino make for an excellent marketing methodology and felt inclined to reduce their standards to conform. Whatever the motive, the attempt to promote good taste was done in had taste.

Thank you for RECOGNIZING our local chapter of the American Institute of Wine and Food. It was a splendid article, but it missed acknowledging a major contributor 10 Dallas food-your own publication. D Magazine has a profound-but not readily apparent–impact on the Dallas food scene. By reporting on fond and wine you educate consumers, which in turn increases the sophistication of the local palate and builds demand for good food. The increased sophistication and demand helps create a market for better restaurants and wine. Increased availability, quality, and variety make it possible for people to experiment and increase their awareness and sophistication. D’s restaurant reporting is a major force in this “virtuous cycle” from which we all benefit.

Is a Best a Good Thing?
Normally 1 respect and many times concut with your dining choices and awards. But your Best Burger award crossed the line. I have been a Rose’s regular for many years. But its greatest charm, besides Rose, is its obscurity. Last week I showed tip for my weekly constitutional and there was a line out the door. They had to close an hour early because they ran out of food. Normally a restaurateur would love the attention a D Best brings. But Rose is damn near I00 years old and she. her sister, and helper Ron do all the cooking themselves. They can’t handle it. You should have been more considerate in your award choices. No one would have argued with Keller’s and they can handle the rush. An honorable mention on the sly would’ve been more appreciated by everyone.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE: We received a thoughtful Mass card from Rose herself in appreciation. {Thank you. Rose- We need it!) In it was a hand-written note: “All I can say is thank you kindly. Come by and have a treat. “
