1999 AUTO BUYERS’ GUIDE

Auto buyers who are seeking the ultimate in luxury, comfort, and safety should look no further than the latest in 1999 vehicles. Whether it is a new introduction or an update to an existing model, cars and trucks are boasting the latest in cutting-edge technological features and innovative style. The 1999 vehicle line-up is a definite reminder that there is always something to look forward to in the ever-changing automobile industry.

Dallas drivers will find plenty top-of-the-line automobiles equipped with the most modern of conveniences, such as individual automatic temperature controls, heated and cooled ergonomie seating, and massage seating that automatically adjusts to fit each passenger’s body contour. Computerized navigation systems, adjustable pedals to fit a driver’s height, and the ability to call roadside assistance with the touch of a button are other luxury features sure to entice the most discriminating auto buyer.

Safety remains a top concern for auto manufacturers across the board. Some high-end vehicles include electronic traction control systems that prevent slips and slides on slick surfaces by automatically tapping the brakes or adjusting the throttle. Several models come equipped with a control that turns off an air bag where a baby is seated, and more automobiles include standard side-impact airbags and front airbags that deploy at a gentler force during light-impact collisions. Built-in sensors that keep the driver a safe distance from the car in front of them, and short-range rear warning systems that alert drivers to certain objects near the rear of their vehicle when backing up are other new safety features to look for in high-end models.

Vehicle exteriors are leaning toward a more sleek, sophisticated look. Creamy whites, pearl effects, metallics, various shades of green, deeper reds, bright yellows, and denim blues are expected to be top choices. A favorite in Dallas, leather and wood accents and quality sound systems, are finally becoming standard interior features.

The following is a brief overview of what to expect from your favorite vehicles in 1999, with a few new additions to consider. Enjoy your drive.

AUDI

This spring could likely mark the beginning of a new driving craze in Dallas with the new TT Coupe from Audi. With all of the credentials of an authentic German sports car with its 180-horsepower 1.8 liter turbocharged five-valve engine, this ultramodern coupe has a five-speed manual transmission, disc brakes with ABS, and a highly-sophisticated sport suspension. Those who crave speed will enjoy the TT Coupe’s ability to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 7.4 seconds.

The TT Coupe offers extreme safety features such as two head/thorax side airbags in the front and back seats, standard airbags, front seat belt pretensioners. and seat belt force limiters. Some of the special standard features of the coupe include an 80-watl sound system with eight speakers, leather covered steering wheel, front fog lights, and automatic climate control with a dust and pollen filter.

Those opting for Audi’s Comfort Package can expect healed front seats with individual temperature controls, driver informat ion display with 6-function trip computer, vehicle auto check system, a 175-watt Bose premiuni sound system with a six-disc CD changer, Valcona leather seating upholstery, and a hands-free cellular phone.

Drivers will enjoy the surprisingly large storage capabilities of the ’IT Coupe. The carpeted trunk is extra-spacious, and cargo space increases even more with the bench Hipped forward. The gleaming cockpit-style interior features include stainless steel pedals, leather body-hugging seats, and aluminum-polished dash, steering wheel, door panels and gear-lever.



CADILLAC

Cadillac’s 1999 luxury sport-utility vehicle, the Escalade, is a rugged, yet refined automobile. The Vortec 5700 V8 engine boasts 225-horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. The 1999 Escalade is equipped with the Autotrac selectable all-wheel-drive system that can automatically improve traction on slippery or wet roads.

Luxury abounds in this SUV’s interior with leather heated seating, rich wood trim. BOSE Acoustimass music system with two separate audio sources, connections from five power outlets for a portable computer or fax machine, and the convenient OnStar system. OnStar is a package of services that uses lui advanced cellular communication system linked to Global Positioning Satellites to enhance security and safety. At the push of a button, the driver is connected to trained OnStar advisors 24 hours a day to assist with roadside assistance, directions, or medical help. OnStar can also track the vehicle if it is stolen and unlock it if the keys get locked inside.

CHEVROLET

Chevrolet is shining its spotlight in 1999 on (he updated Impala and Silverado. The 1999 Impala ’s base engine is equipped with a 3800 V6 engine with 180-horsepower and 205 lb-ft. of torque, Chevrolet continues Its long tradition of vehicle safely with a new structural headliner, an optional side-impact air bag, energy-absorbing foam to help reduce head injuries, and additional structure in the rear doors.

A unique RoomFirst feature of the Impala results in a vehicle that feels bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Interior luxuries include rear-seat headrests, optional steer wheel-mounted controls, and dual front temperature controls. A content theft-deterrent system, and the new OnStar option are smart features of the Impala for added peace of mind.

The all-new Chevrolet Silverado pickup is bigger, faster, stronger, and more efficient than before. The new three-section frame provides a smooth, quiet ride, and the front suspension presents several upgrades, including improved on-center feel, enhanced stability, and greater durability. A major highlight of Silverado’s chassis design is its 4-wheel disc/4-wheel ABS brake system, standard on all models. Also, a family of three new Vortec 4800, 5300 and 6000 V8 engines are offered on the 1999 Silverado. A unique Tow/Haul feature will allow drivers to change shift patterns while towing or hauling.

FORD

The Explorer sport-Utility vehicle continues to be the king of popularity for Ford. The Explorer family adds another model in 1999, the Explorer Sport Trac, made for those who want an SUV. sport coupe, and compact pickup truck combined. It pairs the comfort and convenience of an SUV with the added utility of a cargo bed for versatility. The five-passenger SUV is powered by a 204-horsepower. 4.0-liter SOHC V6 engine.

Making it’s debut this year as a concept car. Ford plans to re-introduce its legendary Thunderbird. It goes back into production for the new millennium, but Dallas Thunderbird fans can look forward to design elements from the Thunderbirds of 1955-57 and 1961-62, simplified into contemporary forms? The cues include porthole windows. aluminum-finished chevrons, hood scoop, removable hardtop, round headlamps, tail-lamps and fog lamps, and the trademark Thunderbird badge prominently displayed on the vehicle’s nose, rear and across the front seat backs. It will be introduced in a sun-mist yellow exterior with the aluminum-finished Thunderbird script stretching across both rear quarter panels.



LAND ROVER

Land Rover s all new Discovery Series II has been redesigned to enhance handling, performance, and on-road comfort. This “go-anywhere, do-anything” vehicle provides a smooth, yet powerful ride with a 4.0 liter. 188-horesepower. 250 lb.-ft torque V8 engine.

Drivers and passengers will enjoy a roomier interior, reclining and ergonomical-ly designed seats with optional heating, dual temperature settings, 11-speaker In-Car Bntertainment package, and adaptive automatic transmission thai adjusts to individual driving styles. The Discovery Series II provides a better ride with the world’s first application in an SUV of an Active Cornering Enhancement system, which reduces vehicle body lean while cornering.

Committed to safety, Land Rover has enhanced its security features with standard airbags, full side-impact protection, and four wheel Electronic Traction Control.

LINGOLN

Navigator, Lincoln’s luxury sport-utility vehicle, enters its second full year with some considerable updates. In 1999, the Navigator will feature clearer emissions and convenient adjustable driver pedals. It will also offer an adjustable speed-compensated volume control for the new seven-speaker Alpine audio system, which automatically adjusts volume depending on vehicle speed. A hands-free programmable portable cellular phone and a numeric keypad on the driver’s door have been added to Navigator’s standard equipment

A powerful four-valve engine will power the Navigator this year. The 5.4-liter V8 Intech’” engine delivers a hefty 300-horse-power at 5,000 rpm and 3601’1.-lb. of torque at 3.000 rpms. This engine is expected to enhance the Navigator’s claim to fame-the ability to haul or tow super-heavy loads.



MERCEDES-BENZ

There is a waiting list already in place in Dallas for the highly-anticipated Mercedes-Benz 2000 S-Class. available this spring. This new flagship sedan is designed to set new standards for safety, performance, occupant comfort, and value in the premium luxury class.

The striking design of the S-CIass is highlighted by a coupe-like profile. Although the total length is shorter than the previous S-Class, rear legroom is increased and the vehicle is nearly 500 pounds lighter for belter fuel efficiency and performance. Drivers can choose from two V8-powered models: the S430 with a 275-horsepower 4.3 liter V8 and the S500 with a 302-horsepower 5.0-liter V8. The drive-adaptive, 5-speed automatic features a manual gearbox with one-touch shifting, allowing the driver to control gear selection with the flick of a wrist.

Mercedes” innovative Tele-Aid system offers services from a three-button module on the rear-view mirror. In an emergency, the driver can press an SOS button which immediately establishes voice contact with Protection One. This relays crue m! infornation, such as the exact location of the vehicle and the model and color of the car. Also, if a collision deploys any airbag, the system automatically establishes contact with Protection One.

Safely features include eight air bags. Head Protection Curtains, seal-belt Emergency Tensioning Retractors, belt-force limitera and Brake Assist for smarter stopping.

The all-new S-Class will come standard with a satellite-based COMMAND Navigation System, displayed on the center console. The system can be directed by voice commands, controls on the steering wheel. or buttons around the display screen, ft uses a CD-ROM and a color display to map out routes and find restaurants, service stations, and even the nearest ATM.

The car also boasts the world’s first smart cruise control system, which can automatically maintain a pre-set distance behind the car in front with help of a radar sensor and apply partial braking if needed. Even the climate control is ’smart’ in the S-Class, with a system that can vary temperature and air flow for individual passengers.
