Q: If Dallas has just one newspaper, why is there a “Western Morning News” sign on the building on Main between Field and Akard? Is it some kind of alternative paper?-B.L., Dallas
A: Those who recall the TV series “Dallas” may remember that the Davis Building, also known as the old First Republic Bank building, was used as the facade for the local newspaper where J.R. Ewing would frequently go to hush up scandals before they hit the front page. Because the building is unoccupied, there is no reason to remove it yet.
Q: I’ve been taking my family to bike and play at White Rock Lake lately, and I’m confused. Why all the cul de sacs on Lawther Drive?-B.G., Dallas
A: During the ’80s, lake-area residents complained about rowdy youths cruising the scenic drive along the lake’s eastern shore. So, the city divided Lawther into three sections, leaving areas near the Bath House Cultural Center and Winfrey Point off-limits to cars. This year the city tried unsuccessfully to get approval for a federal transportation subsidy block grant with which to shift East Lawther further away from the lake and relocate a hike and bike trail closer to die water. The city plans to apply again next year.
