THE DALLAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dallas Public Schools (known until last year as the Dallas independent School District, or DISD) are one the most talked about, cared about topics in Dallas. While debate rages on about the condition and future of the system as a whole and what we can and should do about it, almost everyone agrees that within the system are some schools that already work and work well. The Dallas Independent School District’s vanguard. academy, and magnet schools are among these. For more information about these schools and others, call the DISD at 824-1620.

Preschools and Elementary Schools

Bright Horizons Conservatoire. 1200E. Jackson Road, Carrollton, 75006. 242-9552.

Instruction in music, Spanish, and computers is part of daily schedule. Extracurricular activities (bailer, art, etc.) are taught by specialists in each field from .3 to 5 p.m. for an extra fee. Before and after-school care available from 6:50 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The school has a comprehensive summer camp program with sports, swimming, recreation, and education tor all ages.

Director: Pat Mattingly- Provides both a strong traditional and innovative academic foundation with special emphasis on motor development, fine arts, Spanish, animal life, horticulture, and an early introduction to computers. Its programs and curriculum are regularly evaluated by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and the National Association or” Independent Schools.

Small classes with individualized, self-paced programs. Features include learning centers and computers. Extended care in the afternoon until 6 p.m. Also offers summer camp facilities. Extracurricular activities include ballet, gym-nasties, piano,art, and computer instruct ion. The school is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs.

The Parish Day School of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. 14115 Hillcrest, 75240.239-8011. Founded in 1972. Coed, 3 years through 6th grade. Uniforms K-6. Tuition; $2,207-$5,411. 440 students; 50 staff members. Headmistress: Gloria Snyder. Average class size is 18. Structured. traditional program maximizing strengths in verbal and written communication, reading comprehension, and mathematical concepts. Weekly computer classes for hildren 4 years old through 6th grade with a student-computer ratio of 1:1. Spanish taught from 3 years through 6th grade. Classes in music, art, P.E., science lab, critical and creative thinking, and Great Books, plus special opportunities in chorus, creative dramatics, Odyssey of the Mind, math club, computer club, and other academic enrichment programs. A progressive academic program offered. Math, science, language arts, and foreign language form the core of the curriculum. Children advance at their own pace, while work is closely monitored.

St. Philip’s. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, 75215. 421-5221. Founded in 1958. Coed, 3 years through 4th grade. Will offer class for 2-year-olds in 1995-96. Tuition: $3,216. 160 students; 9 teachers, all certified. Headmaster: Dr. Terry J. Flowers. St. Philip’s School and Community Center is a small, private Episcopal school that focuses on developing the whole child. The institution places as much emphasis on developing students’ pride and self-esteem as on developing their skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic. “Look at me! 1 am sharp, empowered, talented, and proud without limit,” is a line from the school’s creed. St. Philips aims to offer quality education to those who could otherwise not afford it.

Principal: Ray Klodzinskt. The emphasis here is on a developmental educational approach to learning. Offers a complete elementary program including music, physical education. Spanish, computers, and art. A Christian educational alternative.

White Rock North Private School. 9727 White Rock Trail, 75238. 348-7410. Established in 1964, White Rock North School produces leaders of tomorrow. The goal is to develop the whole child by nurturing personal integrity, self-esteem, and a feeling of self-worth. The school is committed to providing an academically accelerated program that allows for successful learning in a challenging and motivating environment. Located on a 10-acre campus in North Dallas, the coeducational school serves students of ail religious preferences in preschool through 8th grade, offering an education serious in principles, strong in academics and in the rich spirit of love and life. An extended-day enrichment program is available to students enrolled in the school. Good Shepherd is a U.S. Department of Education Recognized School of Excellence in the Exemplary Schools program.

The Hillcrest Academy is a nonsectarian private school that offers a spectrum of children the opportunity for achievement of the highest academic excellence based on consistent and competitive standards, as well as an environment which nurtures personal integrity, self-esteem, individual artistic and imaginative expression, responsibility for one’s own actions, and respect for others and the educational process. Lakehill is an independent school accredited by both ISAS and SACS, with an accelerated college preparatory curriculum. 100 percent of Lakehill graduates go on to colleges and universities. It considers itself among the best private schools in Dallas but with asmall-er, more family-like atmosphere. The school stresses a well-rounded program of academics, athletics, community service, and campus activity.

College preparatory school for children with learning disabilities- The Winston School was founded on the belief that learning differences are not necessarily disabling. Winston emphasizes successes and challenging shortcomings in any area, whether reading or fine art, math or athletics. The innovative curriculum includes state-of-the-art computer labs, drama, photography, camping trips and hands-on educational experiences. More than 90 percent of all Winston graduates go on to attend college.
