PICKS: Cindy and her group headed west to Ponder in Denton County and Ranchman’s Cafe (AKA The Ponder Steak-house), a retro chic sort of country eatery made popular by its gargantuan steaks, french fries cut to order, and made-from-scratch pies. “You ought to go there,” Cindy reports. “It’s a hoot!” She recommends the baked potato, which must be ordered a day in advance. Susan and her husband, Jeff Lester, can’t play enough, so the couple spent as much time as possible at Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas. “We had always heard that golf in Texas was amazing, and after being in Dallas for two weeks, we couldn’t agree more.” They laud Mike Abbott, Four Seasons director of golf, and his staff. “Because of them,” says Susan, “I’m no longera ’hooker.’ “

WHY:In Dallas to sing during opening ceremonies of World Cup Soccer and unveil her star in the Walk of Fame at Hard Rock Cafe.

PICKS: Tanya made a whirlwind stop at the Hard Rock Merchandise Shop for souvenirs including one bomber jacket ($280); one bag of Hard Rock pins ($6 each); T-shirts ($8.50 each) for her two kids, Presley and Grayson, two caps ($12 each) and a motorcycle jacket ($325), the last item compliments of the management.

WHO: Gloria Steinem

WHY: In Dallas to promote her latest book, Moving Beyond Words (Simon & Schuster), at Borders Books & Music.

PICKS: Gloria made it clear that she prefers the Dallas of the ’90s to the Dallas depicted in the television series. “Dallas is nothing like the television show-the biggest difference is that strong Texas women are here.”

WHO: Maria Maples Trump

WHY: In Dallas for “The Will Rogers Follies” at Dallas Summer Musicals.

PICKS: A home-suite-home at the Adol-phus Hotel, made homier for 10-month-old Tiffany Trump thanks to a hotel staffer, Anita Siegers, who loaned a cozy crib and highchair to the traveling Trumps. Mrs. Trump praises “the hospitality and warmth of the people” of Dallas. “They made me feel very welcome.”



WHO: Kenny Rogers

WHY: In Arlington for the grand opening of the restaurant he co-owns, Kenny Rogers Roasters.

PICKS: Catch this. ..When Kenny “Perfect Game” Rogers of the Texas Rangers asks if” he’s seen the new stadium, he replies, “I noticed it on my way here to meet you. It’s really beautiful, and I can’t wait to see it [inside]-and see you play in it. I promise to come back when you guys are playing again, and I’ll throw the first pitch-if you’ll sing the National anthem.”

WHY: In Dallas to star in “Love Letters” at The Playhouse at Park Cities.

PICKS: Soup du jour at the Adol-phus Hotel. Each morning, Heston selected a pre-performance soup from a custom list prepared by hotel chef William Koval.

WHY: In Dallas for “Discovery Fest ’94,” the Expo for people “50-plus and proud!”

PICKS: The NBC weather icon enjoys the Stoneleigh Hotel and observes that the Maple Avenue neighborhood “has retained the old southern, Texas quality…yet its as modem as tomorrow.” On Dallas, Scott says, “You feel the electricity, you feel the growth…but I love Fort Worth, and I know Dallas doesn’t want to hear that.
