Dear Members:

I am excited that two specials created and produced by KERA will premiere this month on Channel 13. After Goodbye: An AIDS Story offers a poignant look at the healing that comes from grieving the loss of a loved one. The one-hour special, airing Wednesday, June 23, at 8 p.m., spotlights Dallas’ world-renowned Turtle Creek Chorale and its emotionally charged renditions of When We No Longer Touch. The show also features commentary from Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, who is considered the world’s foremost expert on death and dying. (Please see page 92 for a feature story about the program.) After Goodbye will make its national debut on PBS this fail.

Another new KERA special to look forward to this month is Feel it in My Bones, which airs Wednesday, June 30. at 8 p.m. on Channel 13. This documentary explores the history and archaeological discoveries found in two sacred burial grounds: Freedman’s Cemetery in Dallas and the African Burial Ground in lower Manhattan. Historical and poetic narrations, compelling interviews and archiva) footage are illuminated by creative and unusual storytelling to document the attempts to preserve the heritage of these important burial sites. (Turn to page 97 for in-depth information on this program.)

Other shows produced by KERA that Will debut in the near future include Your Toxic Trash, a half-hour participation special designed to enlighten viewers about the hazardous wastes found in household gsrbage and about how to make the home a safer place, and For a Deaf Son, a program that looks at how deaf children acquire language and explores the important choices parents of these children must make. No Middle Ground, a feature film dramatizing the American Indians’ struggle for survival in the 1850s, and The U.S.-Mexican War, a two-hour documentary about the war fought from 1846 to 1848, are additional KERA productions that are currently in development.

We at KERA are proud of the quality and variety of all of our productions. Your financial support along with our corporate and foundation underwriters, make them all possible. I invite you to tune in this month for After Goodbye and Feel It in My Bones and to watch for further information about our upcoming specials.

Now that school’s out, the children in our communities are anticipating their summer hiatus from the classroom. Parents who would like their children to make productive use of their free time can encourage them to tune in to some of our summer programs thai reinforce their classroom learning. Reading Rainbow, now celebrating its 10th season, brings the excitement of books and instills a love of literature in young viewers. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? motivates an interest in geography with its fast-paced game show format. Square One TV encourages preteens to turn on to math, and In the Mix explores important issues and provides useful information that is meaningful to teenagers (and their parents). As always, Sesame Street, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Barney & Friends and lamp Chop’s Play-Alongm there to delight preschoolers and help them develop a variety of learning and social skills.

For more than 30 years, parents have trusted KERA Channel 13 and now KDTN Channel 2 to provide quality, commercial-tree, non-violent television programs lor children of all ages. I encourage you to make these shows an important part of your child’s summer holidays.

Best wishes,
