STYLE Basic Instincts

God invented provocative lingerie, and it was good. Since that first fig leaf, feminine unmentionables have evolved along sociopolitical lines sculpting nature into whatever silhouette was fashionable and have remained, until now, a woman’s best secret weapon. Which brings us to the ’90s genre of underwear as outerwear, the look-at-my-lingerie-but-don’t-touch-it thing that is the height of fashion to some, and to others merely indecent exposure, Due in part to mis showcasing, lingerie is enjoying a renaissance. Contemporary offerings have been tailored to provide feminine support in the boardroom, to proffer the comfort and flexibility needed to tackle all manner of sports, and to occasionally point up the differences that remain between them and us. So rather than attempt to uncover the deep global significance of underwear, shop instead for some that suits personal physiognomy and the occasion, and let lingerie be what it was intended to be: an outward, visible sign of an inward lascivious state of mind.

Where to shop: Neiman Marcus is noteworthy for the city’s most discreet, knowledgeable sales staff, and Macy’s shouldn’t be missed for sale merchandise. And don’t miss the small but stellar stash of La Perla at The Gazebo. The cotton pieces at Cotton Island and the modernist’s must-haves by Calvin Klein are also worth a try-on. The small collection at Cache wins out over Victoria’s Secret though both offer translations of expensive lingerie at a reasonable price.
