On April 25, 1953, hotel porter Doad Sanders and his family of six became the first residents of the new Rhoads Terrace, a black housing project in southeast Dallas. The 1,000-unit complex was named for Dr. Joseph J. Rhoads, former principal at Booker T. Washington High School. Sanders’ four-bedroom unit cost $24 a month.
