Designs for Life

Custom-made Levi jackets from designers around the world will grace The Dallas Collection on October 25. The Dallas Collection, an annual fund-raising auction and fashion show, is organized by the Design Industries Foundation for AIDS to benefit community-based AIDS service providers. The auetion features denim doctored by such well-known design folk as Geoffrey Beene, Bill Blass and Anne Klein. Past shows have fetched upwards of $7,500 per jacket (a Bob Mackie creation), and Magic Johnson has given permission to one local designer to use his name and Lakers basketball number on a jacket for this year’s show. The silent auction and party will begin at the Loews Analole Hotel at 6 p.m., and the fashion show will follow at 8 p.m. For information, call 871-1053. Tickets are $50, $150 and $250.

An Ageless Tale

Singer Millie Jackson stars in the musical comedy Young Man, Older Woman at the Naomi Bruton Main Theatre. The production, part of the Junior Black Academy of Arts and Letters series, also features soul artist Miles Jaye and comedian Reynaldo Rey. Jackson, who does a weekly radio show on KKDA offering advice to the lovelorn, curbed her street-wise, raunchy style for the show, which nevertheless promises to be a rousing affair. Performances are Oct. 7-10 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Call 373-8000 for tickets.

Kids Just Have Fun

On October 3 and 4. thousands of masked little people will overrun a 13-acre chunk of North Dallas. KidAround, an outdoor children’s entertainment festival, will take place on a greenbelt in Park Central, between Forest Lane and LBJ. Nationally known storytellers, puppeteers and musicians (including Annie Hickman and her All American Bug Show) will perform on covered stages. Children can frolic in a giant sandbox and fiddle around in computer workshops. Activities and entertainment will be geared for children ages 3-10, and proceeds will benefit The Family Place, a non-profit agency formed in 1977 to help victims of domestic violence. Gates are open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for Pepsi KidAround are S6 each. For information, call 559-2170.

Bald Ambition

Steve Timmons and the rest of his stubble-headed posse come to (own October 14. The United States Men’s Volleyball team will take the court to face Japan’s Olympic team at Moody Coliseum on the SMU campus. At the summer games in Barcelona, the entire USA team shaved their heads to protest a post-game ruling that gave the victory to the Japanese. The baldies mean business this time. Sprinter Michael Johnson, marathoner Francie Larrieu Smith and other Dallas/Fort Worth Olympic athletes will appear in a ceremony before the 7:30 p.m. game. Tickets for the Comerica Bank USA/Japan Olympic Volleyball Challenge are $10 to $22. For information, call 739-7007.

Mime’s the Word

World-famous French pan-tomimist Marcel Marceau is saying goodbye to the States-or rather, waving goodbye. On October 11, Theatre Three presents Marceau at McFarlin Auditorium as part of his farewell American tour, which may very well be your last chance to see Marceau’s classic characterization of Bip, the white-faced clown with the stovepipe hat.

Tickets range from S5 to $100 with a matinee at 2:30 and an evening performance at 7:30. For tickets, call 520-2787.
