Polo for Pachyderms

Avid polo player and actor Tommy Lee Jones takes polo mallet in hand this month for the Polo for Rhinos fundraiser at Glen Rose Polo Field on May 9. The benefit match, featuring Dallas-area players, will help fund the transportation of 10 highly endangered black rhinos from Zimbabwe to Texas for a species propagation program at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. General admission is $24 and includes boxed lunches, or you can buy a Celebrity Match Box ticket for $75, including lunch, a preview party and a guided tour of the new rhino facility at Fossil Rim. Art of Love

The Kimbell Art Museum celebrates mythological love with a collection of 18th-century paintings depicting the amorous adventures of Greek and Roman gods and their mortal lovers. The Loves of the Gods: Mythological Painting from Watteau to David is an exhibition of 62 paintings from Europe, the Soviet Union and the United States, including 10 works on loan from the Louvre. Created in pre-revolutionary France during the reign of Kings Louis XIV and XV. the paintings reflect the decadence and passion not only of their Olympian subjects, but of the ancien régime itself. The exhibit portrays mythological stories told by Homer, Virgil and Ovid and includes interpretations of such familiar scenes as the rape of Europa and Leda and the Swan. The Kimbell Art Museum, the third and final stop, organized Loves in conjunction with the Reunion des Musées Nationaux (the French National Museums) and (he Philadelphia Museum of Art. Conceived and planned by the Kimbell’s senior curator Colin Bailey, Loves will be on exhibit in Fort Worth from May 23 through August 2. For more information, call (817) 332-8451.



The Gospel Truth

For an uplifting evening attend the free 1992 Gospel Festival at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Even non-believers will feel the power of local church choirs and singers belting out a mix of traditional and contemporary gospel. Last year the Jackson and Hallelujah Delegation had the near-capacity crowd of 1, 600 clapping, shouting and praising. Because gospel has such prominence in much of today’s popular music, this year’s show will Include both robed church choirs and R&B bands with a strong gospel sway. May 31, at 7 p. m. Dancing to a Different Beat Don’t miss Spectrum, a three-day festival for Dallas-area independent choreographers and dancers. It’s a rare chance to see such an eclectic mix of modern and contemporary dance presentations; performing are groups like Dance Fusion, as well as dancers Claire Williamson, Vicki Pirrello, Donna Moham and Karen Robinson.
