Thumbs down to the Dallas County Commissioners Court for its recent spate of political posturing. In late January, the commissioners passed a resolution supporting South African leader Winnie Mandela, who was visiting the city-thankfully, without the gang of bodyguards whose actions back home have tarnished her halo. On that same day. the commissioners also adopted an anti-abortion resolution declaring January 22, the 19th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision. “Sanctity of Human Life Day.” The resolutions have no practical effect and certainly represent a waste of time and taxpayers’ money. The commissioners, after all. were elected to handle more mundane matters such as roads and bridges, not pontificate on matters beyond the scope of their duties.
