Gizmos For Grown-Ups

Dallas’ most touted toymeis-ter, Michael Malouf (below) of Modern Toys fame, is up to his red high-tops in yo-yos, kaleidoscopes and Japanese Ultraman monsters. Malouf s just opened the city’s first toy store for adutts, Right Brain/Left Brain in Deep Ellum, and he’s trying to decide whether the monsters should be shelved on the right-brain side of the store or the left-brain side. Over 5OO different playthings are loosely divided according to which side of the mind they appeal to-the logical, detail-oriented left, or the creative, not-always-reasonable right. Since most of his clients at the now-defunct Modern Toys were adults buying for themselves, Malouf began toying with the idea of a place just for grown-ups. “Lawyers especially like the Godzilla head that roars/’ he says. Besides toys. Right Brain/Left Brain carries a selection of wacky cards, T-shirts and grown-up versions of childhood games like Go Fish. There are also some of Modern Toys’ most popular items, like the drumming gorilla clock. “Fake cockroaches and the Jesus nightJigttts are staples,” says Malouf. “We’ll always have those.” 2924 Main, Suite 103. 748-4477. -Blise Fierce

Mambo IVIania

Maybe it’s ihe heat, or the Olympics in Barcelona, but suddenly everyone wants to be a mambo king. Before you jump into the middle of a crowded dance floor, however, practice is advised. Most dance studios now teach Latin dancing, and many also have inexpensive introductory specials.

At Prestonwood Dance Studio (661-8701) beginners can take two private lessons and attend two practice parlies for $20. One private lesson, two group lessons and one practice party is $24.95 at all Arthur Murray Dance Studios (351-0478). and Summertree Dance Studio (392-3224) has four private lessons and six group dances for $20. To really learn the dances. Collage (369-6811J has Latin I classes every week for $ 15 per session.

Once you get the basic steps down, head for Eduardo’s Aca y Alia at 2914 Main in Deep Ellum. Every Sunday night from 8:30 to midnight Soul Caribe fills the club with music to mambo, merengue, cha-cha and rumba by.

For a really authentic Latin experience, try Club Huatulco, 2900 Walnut Hill Lane, which features live bands every weekend. One recent Saturday night a 12-piece mambo orchestra, complete with dancers, packed the house-nothing quite like salsa on a hot summer night.-Elizabeth Robbins
