On March 17, 1952, a United States Marine Corps C-46 on its way to Cherry Point, North Carolina, caught fire at 4,000 feet in the skies over Dallas. While 21 men parachuted to safety, the plane crashed in a field southeast of Dallas, a few yards from the San Jacinto Elementary School.
