CRIME At the Lew Sterrett Justice Center, clever cons are always on the lookout to get out. “They just don’t want to be here,” understates Assistant Chief Deputy and Detentions Commander BOB KNOWLES.
So far, Knowles and his staff have managed to thwart even the most creative attempts at freedom in the seven years since the jail opened-and that includes one inmate who literally attempted to draw himself out of the slammer.
“We had a guy who was such a talented artist,” says Knowles. “that when he wasn’t working on removing tiles in his cell by chiseling away at the grout, he would cover up his progress by replacing the hole with a perfect drawing of the tiles.” During one of the three daily inspections of the inmate’s cell, one of the guards leaned on just the right spot and the cardboard buckled under, leaving the jailhouse Van Gogh to do a whole lot of explaining.
